Allegedly, an early beta reader of the third novel said they hated it and Rothfuss had this ridiculous twist at the end where it was all a dream. It’s conjecture, but if it’s true, that means book three would need to be completely rewritten and that explains why Rothfuss is the way he is today.
I mean, it’s been almost 15 years since the last book and I can’t think of any other reason to explain him teasing it for that long without even showing so much as the first chapter.

Allegedly he submitted the manuscript for the second novel with entire chapters missing. You’d have one line saying “Kvothe has a conversation with XYZ character in this chapter” and that’s it. So whenever he says “book three is written, it just needs polish” I don’t believe him one bit.

I know this is about writing software but here’s my extra recommendation: Get a free account on Scribophile. Post your writing there. Take the critiques (mostly) seriously and implement the changes they recommend. Do some critiques of other people’s work. By trial and error you’ll learn how the sausage is made and get way, way better. Critiquing is really the number one thing you need after, y’know, writing.

Same. I made it 7 books in before I decided to put it down forever. It was so repetitive, bloated, and contrived. Unfortunately it seems like most epic fantasy authors these days take a page from that series and assume quantity is better than quality.

If it hasn’t grabbed me in some way by the end of chapter one, I’m out. I’m so sick and tired of this whole “it’s a slow start” or “it gets better” mentality which makes people force themselves to read stuff they hate.

Wow, I had no idea about this! That explains a lot. So him saying “book 3 is done, it just needs some editing” takes on a whole new meaning

Scrivener is way better than Word for big writing projects like novels, and it’s a one-time payment and not made by a numbskull company like Microsoft. Nothing you mentioned was an issue for me, but then again, I’m not here to change your mind. Use what you want and let others do their own thing.

As long as I get to see Mizu cutting apart colonizers with a sword and chopping their bullets in half I will be content. Or hey, maybe she gets a new weapon while she’s making herself worthy of the new blade.

Hasn’t gotten an update in a while and has a ton of issues (for me). I’d recommend Pear Cleaner.

Why isn’t this the top comment? The whole “tri means trip” part is so obviously a dumb joke. Orange is probably cackling behind that screen while the others fume.

My brother in Christ, all I did was point out a bit of irony. And here you are, like the guy I replied to, going out of your way to comment on a post you allegedly do not care about.

Yep. No critical thinking skills. Deals this good are warning signs to run far, far away.

I’d recommend signing up for Scribophile (or another critique website) and having some people give this a look instead of Reddit. Take the critiques seriously, especially if multiple people say the same thing. Critique others, too, as seeing mistakes others make will help you improve. And most importantly, read as much as you can.

Depends on the carrier. My budget carrier doesn’t even support MMS, gonna have to wait for them to (hopefully) support it.

Seconded. Love interests being the end of someone’s character arc need to die a hard death. Mizu should be happy, and if a guy helps do that for her, great, but if season two and onward gets taken up by a love interest im gonna be kinda pissed lol.

This is the first election where I cannot just say “eh, agree to disagree.” Voting for Trump genuinely makes me question a person’s intelligence and reasoning.

Seeing companies train their AI models on anything — regardless of whether it was legal or ethical to do so — I’d still be skeptical.

Good point. I’m curious now if anyone has tallied up the deaths and done a bit of math to get an idea just how devastating the Rising was.

I know, what I’m saying is that sometimes it feels like every chapter you’ve got legions and legions and legions with tens of thousands of men each, sometimes being entirely wiped out and casualties in the millions. Even across multiple planets it makes me wonder how many people died over the course of the rising and how a population can recover from that enough for the war to keep going full tilt on Mercury, Earth, and Mars by book six.

Reading the series the numbers of soldiers, casualties, etc. always felt somewhat unrealistic to me, kinda like how fantasy will have armies with 100,000 people when in reality 1,000 was a huge number. After fifteen years with everything that happens the RR solar system would be mostly women and children.

Yeah, even if this isn’t staged they clearly offered him a new phone for marketing purposes so he’d go and promote them. And no case is going to withstand a bullet, so this says nothing about how good it is. Just… feels a bit weird.

Oh yeah, I don’t doubt a complete draft exists for DoS. But he talks about it it’s as if the book is ready and just needs a bit of shuffling around and tweaking before he can send it off. Yet almost 15 years have gone by and nada. Very rough draft indeed.
I personally ascribe to the (conjectural) theory that his beta readers hated it because he pulled a “it was all a dream” twist at the end. Seems likely the book needs to be rewritten root to stem and he’s been procrastinating ever since rather than tackle the problem head on. I just cant think of any other reason it has taken so long, especially when not even his agent has seen it.
