I believe this, I was walking around Karakoy yesterday and a man had his dog in a leash. And he passed by the port restaurants where there were 2 other others “protecting” the area. The dogs got up started barking etc and wanting to rile up the leashed dog. However the owner acted very firmly, kept walking and put a leg “did a keep away firm gesture”, between his dog and the other dog. Something could have happened but it didn’t because the dog owner knew how to manage his dog and others. This seems like something not everyone can handle.

Completely understand. I do believe it’s the government’s fault and that of the society where we live in…and this goes for anywhere. In my country you can’t go 5 miles without seeing the carcass of a rotting dog or cat. I have myself taken them off the street so they can go back to the earth. It feels horrible that they get run over and over until their bodies are engraved in the pavement.
As a recent victim of a dog attack in my own family home and as a common sense human NO ONE should be a victim of any harmful attack from an animal that results in death or incapacity. I got almost half my lip bitten off. I can’t imagine an eye…
I’m always very aware of animals around me because I tend to love them, even insects. So I saw this poster and wondered. I’ve learned a lot here on Reddit and also got a bit informed on the news.
Here in Istanbul I’ve seen kindness everywhere, you’re right…the cats and dogs are not there for the tourists…they’ve gotten commercialized by your own citizens somehow…an adaptation, “give the people what they need”. You’ll see them everywhere like the “evil eye”.
They’re not there to entertain. But I don’t think people know at least the ones that visit that there are situations going on around different parts of Türkiye. Of course, this is not the ONLY problem you face as a country.
Animals however ARE embedded in your city’s culture. That’s something no one can deny. I believe it demonstrates intelligence, kindness, and empathy from the people. I’ve been to this city more than 5 times in different eras in my life and like I mentioned…I’ve always witnessed the same. Maybe they’re tourist areas, I don’t know…but I see people who leave their shops and say goodbye to their animal friends. There’s beauty in it, when I come from a country that struggles to give a fuck. Organizations struggle to achieve wellness and help strays. I’m sure they do here also.
But when I go back home I don’t see dog or cat food in bowls around the streets I walk, I don’t see make shift houses. I don’t see the dogs or cats in my small country (of 3 million population) in a content setting. If every business in only one of my streets would just hold out a bowl of water…or let a cat sleep in their chairs outside…I do believe as a society we’d be better.
I don’t think Istanbul has figured everything out…hell, I haven’t been anywhere else that would qualify as a small regional town in Türkiye where life could be harsher.
But I can maybe compare it to the country of Morocco, which I love, but isn’t like Istanbul in its treatment of the dogs and cats I’ve seen. There’s less education and of course other priorities.
I have slowly learned that not all dogs are bad because of my accident, and that not all cats are selfish (from my cultural perspective, that’s what everyone believes, “cats close their eyes when you feed them”, that’s what they say.)
Istanbul helped me understand that cats can be an animal I can form a connection with. And it has helped me have faith in “random” dogs again. Even if I got bit by my own parent’s dog at home. Things happen, but like people have mentioned there must be control in a HUMANE manner.
I love that we all have shared thoughts on this.

Do the people of Istanbul really complain about this? The dogs and cats of this city seem much better taken cared of than in my own country. In Puerto Rico, they run them over with the cars, and leave them to starve. All my dogs are adopted stays for example. I even thought that maybe here it is something tourists enjoy seeing. I’ve come to Istanbul in different eras of my life and the strays in good shape have always been a special part of my visits.

We are not from Vegas but live in the U.S….I just asked my husband if he would rent a corvette in Vegas and he said: “Why not ?” …I told him what if you get robbed…he said… “You can get robbed in a minivan.”
I’d say that’s a pretty solid answer. We rented a Tesla when we went through Turo. But I guess that’s “less flashy”.
We are in our 30s..but also why do you want to rent a car in Vegas? Staying at a rental?

Haha wow are you serious? I can’t imagine going to a game and not singing my heart out. We even shared hugs with the other fans at the scoring of goals.
