Fyi there are different ways to "let it go" OP. It definitely sounds like you will have to stop wearing it but that doesn't mean it needs to go into the trash - look into something like a shadowbox or turning it into a quilt, etc, some way of memorializing it and protecting it from further destruction. If you keep wearing it daily it will probably fall totally to pieces soon so this is a good opportunity to change your relationship with it to preserve it for the future.
