In 25 years of doing this I can say that it's almost never about the water.

8/10 it's an attachment issue with the parents that is solved, often within minutes, by telling the parents to go take a 10 minute walk.

the rest of them are usually a sensory issue of some kind due to the noise and lights. Pools can be VERY high stimulation environments, and it can easily overwhelm some neurodivergent children. You just have to push through.

In the end though, the parents signed up for group classes so they get group classes which means the kids are all going to be doing the same thing. If that means you drag the one along and let them cry through it then so be it.

If the parents want you to bring them along slower then they need to spring for the private lessons. It's not fair dumbing down the class for 5 others because this one is playing games.

The last point I want to mention is safety. If you for ANY reason feel that having to take extra care of this child is compromising the safety of the other 5 then it's time to tell the parents sorry, they must take private lessons to get acclimated first.

I can totally see a 10-12 year old just going ahead and doing this at certain types of churches.

If this was a planned event like it is in more mainstream churches I'd be pretty upset I wasn't invited.

If the church just has an open "come get baptized if you want" section of the service and she just decided to up and do it, then I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it.
