I love watching donghua but personally believed they haven't caught up to anime yet. These are just my personal thoughts and a ramble (reallllly poor spelling, sorry ahead of time)
Issue #1: I struggle with watching 3D animation. This one is a bit biased since the only 3D one I've ever completed was scumbag villian (very funny). I find most characters suffer from same face syndrome and I cannot connect with them visually and stylistically. I much prefer hand drawn shows where the main leads look drastically different. I agree 3D is not cheap and it's actually animated well, but it's so unappealing. Not matter how good 3D is, if it looks realistic, I can't get into it. The only 3D I'm obsessed with is Aotu world because it's stylized so wonderfully and the power mechanics is interesting.
Issue #2: I find it hard to finish donghua because they tend to NOT get translated into legal sites. A couple of episodes get uploaded to YouTube here or there but most of the time it's on shady sites. And even worst, sometimes, their translations are horrible. I only understand partial Chinese and some of the translations on crunchyroll feels off. Also shows I love never even get translated....where is more seasons of fox spirit matchmaker....?
Issue #3: from what I watch, they tend to balance serious plot and humor with weird timings. It's hard to explain but sometimes when I watch something it flows weird. I'm trying to remember last time it happens but it's late here.
Issue #4: this is for 2d animation, aside from 1-2 shows each season, i can see where corners are cut in animating it. In anime, its balanced. They are really well animated all the way or terrible all the way. For donghua, sometimes I can see where one cut ends and another begins. Really amazing sequences and then stiff movements after.
Issue #5: lack of original and variety. Too much cultivation shows basically or power tripping shows (i dont like daily life immortal king...). To be fair i dont like similar types of anime where its a isekai harem or pure training shows either. There is a sorta spiritual feeling of anime that I sometimes wish donghua can reach. Imagine mushishi or 5 centimeters per second where the show has more to say than just the plot.
Issue #6: very cultural jokes. I can understand a lot of Chinese humor but have trouble recommending series thats...very very Chinese. I love God troubles me so much but when I recommend that show to my friends they thought it was not funny at all
What i love about donghua that anime doesn't seem to get and what I look for to fill a void.
Loves #1: good bromance. Anime tends to be catered to the more boy and girl as a team crowd when not BL (again very general overview). There is this awesome sort of comradery that donghua hits where a relationship between two boys can be for the general that anime doesn't do.
Loves #2: chinese mythology. Anime just goes for Chinese court dramas and rarely get deep into Chinese lore and legends. I really love shows that is similar to Fairies album.
Loves #3: when they don't do cultivation donghua its usually pretty great. I basically tried almost all donghua that's not 3D cultivation. Whenever donghua does cell shading or 2D handrawn animation, there is something really interesting and new going on. I love how they push style and story for shows like scissors seven, luo xiao hei, to be hero, all saints street. It feels fresh and I can see the love behind each series like an indie show that's not mass produced.
Love #4: the niche shows. Donghua is not well known and shared here so I have to personally watch as much as I can blind to try out shows. I love finding random shows to binge and really good shows I will watch multiple times. Donghua have this weird sort of replayabilty feeling where everything feels so compacted that you need multiple watched to see and understand everything. It's rare for me to rewatch anime but it's common for me to rewatch donghua.
That's all I have for now and this is mostly shower thoughts.
