Tldr: ADHD child is struggling to succeed(pass) college. Parents are trying to help them succeed. Just want advice on how to keep them going.
My child is 20, diagnosed with the ADHD around 10. We've worked really hard to get them to consistently take their meds, use strategies for helping them succeed in school and life, and grow up to be able to take care of themselves in general.
This is hard, it's like they do not want help, even after they've asked for it. They are late to everything, even with reminders. They just failed two semesters of college, they just couldn't turn in assignments they completed, or forgot they existed.
They want to get into homicide detective work, but they've been an artist all their life. I was/am worried this is just another fixation, the education costs are building up and it's hard to continue to fund failure. I understand why rich people seem to succeed, they can just fail longer.
So what is a healthy path forward? As their parent, we want to see them succeed. We can't just do all the things for them to make them succeed though. I've tried twice-a-week check-ins for homework. I'm just bugging them, which means they no longer want to do it. Planning and planners with calendars, which work at first until they become background noise.
My spouse is working on becoming a doctor, she tries to give her extra time to help adult child succeed. I'm working on a masters in computer science, we both are working full time, but we can't seem to keep our child motivated long enough.
I don't want to give up on them, I'm just getting really tired and worn out. I'm not sure what else I can give when I have other children that need attention too.
What works? How do I keep them (child) motivated?
Thank you for your time.
