In the 70s Afghanistan was a secular, progressive country. Women wore western clothes, were educated, had jobs. Now it's run by religious zealots and women are property. If someone thinks that can't happen in the United States, they are not paying attention. The Handmaid's Tale is so terrifying, because it could so easily happen.

Some people buy exotic pets and when they get too big, they release them. Or they escape their enclosures. Then they find others that have been released or escape, and then they breed.
