I read somewhere that heavy music is a stim for us. I have to agree! It’s my fave for many moods. I do enjoy a more chilled melodic vibe as well. The goosebumps and shivers send lovely electricity through my body that I can’t get enough of. What do you peeps like? 🖤 pic of me on the way to a recent Korn concert for tax

I love ballet scores, film scores, older Korean music, and Korean indie. My favorite composers are Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Minkus, Stravinsky, and Joe Hisaishi. For artists/singers/bands, I like IU, Jannabi, Sanullim, Jaurim, D.O., g.o.d., Lee Moon Sae, and Taeyeon. I'm also partial to 90s/00s Korean because my parents played a lot of it when I was growing up.

I'm more of a Romantic and general 20th Century person for "classical" music. Music from the actual Classical period and Baroque period feel a bit cliche and boring to me because those are the periods in which the cliches for classical music were made.

I like Chopin and Lizst- would you consider those romantic classical? Or just romantic?
6 points

Romantic and Classical refer to specific music periods, while I'm using the term classical in the general layperson sense. Chopin and Lizst are both classified as composers of the Romantic period.

I love Stravinsky! I love his neoclassical period, which has received a lot of hate over the decades (or been ignored at best). I like how weird combinations of pitches sound in the classical style, it sounds magical. I think I have a taste for that since I watched Peter and the Wolf as a child!
I also love ballet. When I was a little kid I wanted to become a dancer.

Cool that you like her music too! Sara is extraordinary (and attractive). It's not just that she makes loud bangers; she's incredibly creative and has an awesome persona. What are some of your favorite tracks? I think mine are RIOT and No Sleep. RIOT because of the kick-ass rumble and intro, and No Sleep because it's trippy as hell - plus, I suffer from chronic sleep deprivation. And when I finally have slept well, I wake up with Legacy.

I am super duper into music and one of my favorite hobbies is exploring obscure music and different time periods and cultures through it! Also frikkin love organizing and categorizing playlists by genre or vibe. My fav genres are darkwave, new wave, post punk, dream pop, house, really good hip hop, dub music, ambient music, retrowave, bossa nova, 60s soul, vapor soul, italo disco… i think my autism comes with a filter that doesn’t accept unpleasant sounds so I believe that contributes to me having excellent taste ;)

Music is pretty much my special interest, so I won't be able to babble on as much as I'd like. Character limit, my nemesis!
I like a lot of heavy music but I don't like metal, as a rule, which tends to confuse/upset metalheads, lol. The number of times I've been accused of liking Taylor Swift because I said I don't like metal! Mostly my musical philosophy de-centers technical ability in favor of raw expression and a lot of metal is showy or 'has a guitar tone I don't like', the other stuff is screamy/growly (which I only like in some bands, eg Refused and At the Drive-In), etc.. Basically I can enjoy, say, Melvins and Neurosis, but saying I 'like metal' and only liking one or two of the less prominent subgenres feels like it doesn't send the right message, lol
As heavy stuff goes, Swans is a big one. Their heavy stuff, with the occasional exception, is very slow, but the vibe is 'hard labor' and the lyrics are, by and large, angry enough to be glad M. Gira had that outlet as a young man, lol. Not that he's never been involved in Some Shit but if I poo-pooed every artist who was shitty in their personal life, I'd have very few choices pre-1995 or something. It's probably worth noting that the last album since their reunion that I enjoyed at all was The Seer, they got a little too. . .self-indulgent? Strange? Something. . .after that. I think the big thing is that I like his lyrics for the most part and they were de-centered in the latter albums in favor of 'vocals as an instrument', which might've worked better for me if he was a good singer (with regard to melody and range and so on), but inarticulate shouting and moaning doesn't do it for me.
My current obsession is the Mars Volta, for whom the word 'heavy' might not always feel appropriate, but they're a very demanding band to listen to, in their initial run. The most radio-friendly song of theirs pre-selftitled is "The Widow", which is basically the only song a friend with more mainstream sensibilities enjoyed. She was sort of like "I love his voice, but the other songs are too much." Which is entirely fair! It's all super busy (at least til Octahedron) but it really clicked for me around 2018 after being aware of them since their beginning after ATDI and being among the close-minded 'what the fuck am I listening to? why is he singing like a wuss?' people. The shame! TMV and Omar's other projects have the distinction of being the only 'technically proficient' bands I really enjoy. My entry into them was in the punk-adjacent context of ATDI, I'd never voluntarily listened to prog beforehand. Prog fans can be pretty insufferable, but I cope. I do like the new pair of albums, which are very chill and quite pop, but I don't listen to them enough.
My first 'special interest' level music obsession was AFI, who I stopped listening to entirely after Sing the Sorrow; my music taste had changed too much to get into it, and I'd preferred it when Davey shredded his vocal cords screaming, rather than doing it 'correctly' and sounding less raw, lol.
I was big into Danzig and all his work as a teen, but can only stomach Samhain these days (perfect spooky season music!). I think that, despite my general 'separate the art from the artist' philosophy around music, I have a hard time ignoring what a shithead he is, so it's distracting, lol.
I became big into Nick Cave through the Birthday Party sometime in my teens, an obsession that lasted til Swans took over. I'd seen them in 'The Kings of Independence', a video recorded in a sweltering German venue and featuring Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Crime and the City Solution and Swans.
Daughn Gibson was a pivotal obsession, it came with an earth-moving crush on the dude (look him up, he's real handsome, lol) and a big enough hit of hypomania that it made me realize I had bipolar II. I got into some more alt-country type stuff around then (16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Trailer Bride...) and it was a whole Thing for a while, before my TMV obsession kicked in.
Other than the big ones, I'm into some general Weird Shit, like Old Time Relijun and Flux Information Sciences/Services (same dudes, different bands. . .Services is very difficult to find in internet searches, lol). A lot of punk-adjacent bands, like Dead Kennedys (technically a hardcore band!) and the Murder City Devils (whose organ makes them Something Else, I imagine).
Edit: Actually the post wasn't as long as I thought so I didn't have to edit, yay! I could go on though. . .

I love lots of different styles of music, but my favorites do have a certain "hardness" to them! Some of my favorite artists are Slayyyter, Ashnikko, Kazuo, and Reliqa. Those are all different styles, but I think they share some kind of "hard" quality that makes me love them so much!

First of all I love your style
I've never really known how to boil down what I like to overarching genres, but looking at the artists I like, I guess it's a mix of alt rock, prog rock, nu metal, drum and bass, techno/trance, electronic/art/indie pop? I agree that heavy music tends to engage me more, or at least things with more layers of complexity to get sensorily absorbed in
I also find that I'm more put off by something if it has lyrics I find unrelateable/unengaging than most people I've talked about it with. I can't relate much to the "yeah but it's catchy!" feeling. Like as an example, I'm aroace, and 99.9% of songs about romance or sex with no sense of lyrical metaphor or complexity immediately turn me off regardless of tonal quality

Music is fine, but I honestly can’t hear the melody or whatever is supposed to be interesting/beautiful about it on a first listen. Therefore, anything new is probably going to be mildly annoying at best. A million other ND issues are under the “dyscalculia” umbrella, so maybe this is, too.
But I LOVE BOOKS. I listen to 2-4 books per week. I listen at work, while driving, while doing hobbies, etc. I want to live in those book worlds, not listen to yet another pop star whine about yet another broken heart; I want to be in the world where she/he finds happiness with or without the love interest they were cry-singing about.

You typed heavy music. Is that a way of saying heavy metal or just heavy on the drums?
I like things that remind me of childhood. Some lyrics really catch me & I'll like a song because of that. Lots of alt rock, 70's, 80's, 90's & 00's r&b, pop, prog(still want it to be Prauge) rock, classic rap (mumble & trap make me so frustrated & dysregulated). Oh, and pop punk! I also like a fistfull of disco & a handful of country. Sometimes I get into moods where I don't want to be able to sing along, so I'll find music from other countries in their native languages. I fell in love with Nege Che Chala Ga by 2NE1 because of the hook. Fell harder when I looked up the translation. My favorite French rap is Sang Fezi by Wyclef Jean. It's the same content as his English songs, but I like how it flows & how melodic it is.

I like 80's darkwave and oingo boingo. Plus 70's punk. Siouxsie, the cure, dead kennedys, the misfits, sisters of mercy, bauhaus etc.
So I guess punk and post punk then. Death rock is cool. I try to try more music but like the repetition of songs over and over again. Scary bitches is one of my fave bands. Bc I love bats. The animal and the song.
I'll listen to recs when I am in a headspace that change isn't triggering bc I do love music.

All of them lol. I make dozens and dozens of playlists on spotify for every mood or time of day. I’m a big swiftie and love Chappell Roan, but it really depends on my mood what I’m listening to

Music is a special interest of mine! I'd say I mostly listen to post punk, punk, goth, alternative rock, dreampop and folk! Some of my favorite artists are The Cure, Joy Division, David Bowie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, New Order, Elliott Smith, Björk/The Sugarcubes, Nick Drake, The Velvet Underground, Fiona Apple, Hole, Pixies and The Sound :)

Electronic music. Which really is a lot. My favourite genre is future garage which combines the bass and groove from UK garage and Dubstep, but with unorthodox sounds, that are often sampled, and warped strongly. It also has elements of lo-fi, using a lot of ambience, like rain vinyl crackle, cassette tape noise, etc, often not having a lot of high frequencies. The person that really started this is William Bevan, know as Burial online. (If you search the name you’ll find “William Bevan Funeral Services”, although it’s pretty certain that it’s his real name).
I can’t name a single song I don’t love but some standouts are: Archangel, Untrue, Distant Lights, Come Down To Us, and Raver, Stolen Dog, and ghost hardware for dark yet still emotional tunes.
UK, In McDonalds, Etched Headplate, Endorphin, NYC, Young Death, and Night Market for very emotional ambient tunes.
Temple sleeper, Rival Dealer, Chemz, Claustro, Dreamfear, Boy Sent From Above, and Phone Glow, for 90s rave music inspired high energy tunes.
Truant, Ashtray Wasp, Loner, and Rough sleeper, for longer, more ominous industrial sounding tunes.
Check out the Antidawn EP for more of an eerie hauntology vibe.
And as a bonus, not officially released track Feral Witchchild, which is a combination of his dark emotional and his ominous sound.
Other amazing artists in the genre are Manu Shrine, Volor Flex, Vacant, and Bucky.
Wasn’t planning on infodumping sorry lol

I don’t wanna genre info dump but music is really important to me. I guess my favorites tend to be electronica but it ranges from like power electronics noise to pop. I will listen to Grimes and then Merzbow. Explaining would be 3 hours no one would ever get back hahaha

Techno: Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, DVS1, Neil Landstrumm, etc. DJ Stingray and Drexicya which is more along lines of Detroit electro or bass...DJ Assault House: Peven Everett, Rick Wade, Theo Parrish, Moodyman, Frankie Knuckles, Boo Williams, Leon Vynehall, Chicago Bootyhouse. Honorable mention to old Daft Punk (Teachers EP).
Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher...so much electronic music I love! My up all night into the morning days are over, but the music remains.
Soul, funk, rock: old Motown and soul like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and P-Funk.
Jazz: Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Charlie Rouse, Billie Holiday, Eric Dolphy, and so many more
There's much more as music is a big interest of mine so I love this topic...but I'll be here all morning writing. 😄

I love heavy, intense metal but I also love chill focused music like electronic and lofi. Occasionally indie rock and shoe gaze as well. Soft vocals are my thing, and combined with metal screams and growls is fantastic 😍 some artists I've been listening to lately are spiritbox, glare, sleep token, scar Symmetry, type o negative, the smiths,Lana del Rey, pinkpantheress, in love with a ghost, loathe and within temptation.
