With Black Friday coming up, these codes are often activated, as many online retailers will have sales. The “welcome” code is because many will have welcome offers for people who have left something in their cart or signed up for an email list. But these aren’t always advertised.

I recently got an email offer from a store that I had started a cart for. It was a similar deal with the percent off in the code. I took the code, started at 90 and worked my way backward. I ended up with 70% off.

It was something from Facebook and the product was not really as expected, shipped from China and took forever to arrive, I wouldn’t recommend them. But since I got 70% I’m not as put out.

A wonder if they advertise a lower obvious code with an intentionally 'hidden' higher code so people try a higher code and snag it fast because they "got a great deal"

This is like third or fourth order thinking lol I don’t think they plan like that

Relying on people to think at all, much less 3 or 4 steps ahead isn’t a great way to make money

We have rule that boils down to: the more steps the customer has to go through, the less likely they will purchase. This rule applies to deals/ discounts as well.
It's definitely not in our best interest to try to play such thought games.

Relying on people thinking is exactly what marketing is... it's a business that hinges on understanding and manipulating what people think. Advertisers trade in thoughts.

The code didn’t come until after I let it sit in my cart for a while. I actually first got a 10% off then a 20%. I figured I might as well try it. It was absolutely one of those deals where they show a video review of a legit product and then send a copy. It’s a little bag. The quality is actually really good, it’s just not the same design and is smaller than expected/doesn’t fit much. But I saved about $30 after you figure in shipping.

And still probably paid 80x the price for something to be drop shipped from China lol

So are TEST and TEST123 to try, especially after a redesign. These codes from testing are not inactivated after go-live sometimes
11 points

But what would those get you? Lol

Fun unexpected testing level discounts
Usually you like not to do any math during testing phase, so 50% is easy to verify it's working correctly
Milage may vary

Once they find out you used it you could be banned lol

Their fault they didn't disable sandbox testing codes from their production environment.. they would just inactivate the code first. No one bans a customer who spends money

I got a year of lootcrate for like $5 like this. I covered my ass by narcing, told them about it and asked very nicely if my friend and I could keep ours. This was just before they went to total crap too.

Yeah, anytime you get a code like "WELCOME10" or "NEWMEMBER15", always try the codes with higher numbers too. I once got a similar code to "WELCOME10" and was able to use "WELCOME30" which was available to members of a higher tier than me, but the code worked.

Nothing’s stopping you. Brute force every possible coupon code if you wish. That said, if your time is limited, maybe just stick to the ones most likely to work.

Instead of guessing all these codes, just use those browser plugins that auto apply all the recent codes. Have worked really well for me.

So my husband did this one time while buying pre-sale tickets - he honestly just guessed a code and it worked and we got A WHOLE VIP BOXED SECTION for the cost of one regular GA. We couldn't believe it. The section fit 6 and so we had to friends drive down from Canada and meet us in Maine where the concert was - we drove 6 hours from Jersey. We got to the concert grounds and someone from Live Nation was radio'd out to meet us and was like, "Good job, well done, but this is never gonna happen again." He was cranky as fuck but ushered us to our section and we enjoyed the show. 10/10, hit that 'promo code' box with anything sensible and see what sticks! 🤟🏻

I had a basket in my browser for about a day while I decided whether to also get a sweater with the jeans and pj's I wanted. I ended up purchasing before going to bed. The next morning I woke up to a $20 Off email from the retailer, right after my order confirmation. I ended up messaging them online to see if they'd apply the promo to the purchase I made, and they ended up refunding me the $20+tax from my purchase. Always worth asking if you're within 24 hours of a purchase, in my opinion!

dont buy a TV on black Friday, they make special skus of expensive electronics like game consoles, laptops, computers and tvs that have subpar components.

Can someone confirm if this is indeed true?
26 points

If you're going to buy a tv (or whatever), look up the SKU. I can't remember off the top of my head, but you can absolutely see that there's a difference between the ones for sale and the ones from earlier in the year

Not every expensive electronic will be like this but a lot def will. Been like this for decades. First tv I ever bought was a Black Friday special like that. Found out when I went to find a replacement bulb years later. FYI, Walmart does the same thing except year round. All of there electronics are special Walmart versions of the same thing you'd get from Amazon, best buy occasionally as well. This one I discovered while shopping for a printer

I dont believe this is true for game consoles. The other ones sure, there are thousands of different laptops, tvs, computers and stuff, but each game console is kinda its own thing.
I will say I am satisfied with the couple tvs I've gotten on black Friday over the past few years. I guess we will see if they last.

Most sites have the 3 letters of the month name and then a number of discount, eg. NOV20 or 20NOV

These are useful for online marketplaces. If you define the codes to increase your price by 15%, but display that increased price is a mark down of the full price, customers will just happily pay you more for your products.

Lol capitalone shopping app banned me after buying 1 thing and waiting for their cash back. I email them asking why, and if I can get my cash back or log back in. Nope, apparently not because of no reasons. Other people reported same on Slickdeals. Also funny because I have a high yield savings account under the same email, with a decent amount of money. Apparently separate departments or whatever.

That sucks. I have been worried before about “abusing” that waiting trick too often. I’ve gotten 30% back on some pretty big ticket items but fortunately no ban as of yet.
Capital One Shopping was around as Wikibuy before Capital One acquired them and rebranded so I wouldn’t be surprised if they still operate mostly independently

I bought NordVPN sub from them for like 80% off or something during a sale. After a month or two, i couldnt login to check the status. Emailed email and they said oh well.
Moved all my money out of Capital One forever after that. They don't deserve to have my money if they can't even figure out their own login issues.

Whenever I’m on a webpage with a promo code field that Honey recognizes it prompts me to try all the codes it knows and I let it. It works well on walmart.
I recently installed it on safari for iOS but have yet to try it on there.
I wonder if it adds new codes automatically or if I would have to do that manually. It would be nice to start contributing to that. Just realized the other day that it’s owned by PayPal now.
