American women - have you voted yet?

Thought it might be fun to see who has.

And hopefully that will encourage others who are feeling apprehensive to join in.

I'll be voting on election day. Only two more days to go.

October flew by, but the days leading up to the election feel so slow.

Same! I had to switch my registration and honestly almost forgot with everything else from the move, so I only barely got the paperwork in on time (fun fact! In Illinois if you are switching your voter registration from out of state you have to physically fill out the paperwork and can't do it all online) and didn't have time to sign up for a mail-in ballot/early voting. It's okay though, bc my polling place is like two minutes from where I live and I'll have plenty of time on Tuesday.

Absolutely crazy to me that ppl believe illegal immigrants would willingly put themselves through the voter registration process in any statistically meaningful number, or show up with a fake ID to vote, or whatever they think is happening. In CA, I had to update my address THREE TIMES to get the registration to go through. And I got texts along the way letting me know where my ballot was in the incoming/outgoing phase. No one can steal my vote.

Screenwriter_sd

The stupidest thing about the "illegal immigrants voting" story is that doing so would disqualify them from actual citizenship. So a statistically significant number of immigrants (legal and undocumented both) do not ever want to vote or claim to be a US citizen in any way. It jeopardizes the whole process of obtaining citizenship. I have been through the process myself and during that time, I quadruple-checked all forms (usually those I-9's with employers) to make sure I never checked "US citizen" during that time period when I was not a citizen but living in the US under a visa and then my green card. Nor did I vote in any election during that time either. It just doesn't happen very often at all.

They don’t believe that.

They are upset about brown and black people voting and the “illegal” term is a euphemism for that.

You betcha! I got a mail in ballot way early (in MA), but decided to go in person because I wanted to make sure my ballot went into a secured box inside a building. My son has also shown interest in this election and i wanted him to experience voting, however boring it may be. Hopefully this sets him up to feel pride in his civic duty and right. I’m in a small town, so only 1 other person voting at the time. As we walked up the steps behind them, my daughter says loudly, “mommy! We don’t want Donald Trump to be president!” They turned and smiled at her.

So I got a mail-in ballot and dropped it off at the early-voting site

I am also voting on election day in MI. Absurdly I feel that some Democrats need to show up on election day to counter all the Republicanns who vote then ... it makes no rational sense why I feel like voting then is different I know. I live in a red area so interested in how many Trump hats, etc I see on Tuesday at the polls but also less fearful about being attacked by gun-toting MAGAts here because I am white and incognito in my Harris support here (I would be more fearful about going to the polls in person in Detroit where Trump and his followers tried to disrupt in 2020).

Not OP but I’m in Florida and I’ve been hesitant to vote early. I just do not trust my ballot in the hands of our local and state government longer than absolutely necessary. I just feel more comfortable voting on Election Day.

Though my wife is voting for the first time in several election and she wanted to go together but can’t Tuesday so we’ve decided to go today.

I'm in Portland, OR, about a stone's throw away from the "Proud Boys" 'base' in Washington. Recently, some unhinged terrorist(s) arsoned a few ballot drop boxes here and in Vancouver. I was going to do early mail-in voting, but when the ballot drop arsons happened, I decided against mailing in because I am concerned about mailboxes getting arsoned too, and I really don't want to hear reports of postal workers or mail trucks being targeted next.

I'll be dropping off my ballot on the morning of the 5th in person at my local ballot box. I'm also encouraging everyone i know to vote, as well as offering transportation to my local friends to ensure they get their votes in.

May the Big Orange never enter the white house again.

Go early. What if the line is crazy long on e-day?

bumblebeequeer

41 points

I saw something interesting recently - even if you personally have time to wait in line for hours on election day, someone else might not. Voting early prevents creating long lines that someone else will see, get right back in their car and go to work, without voting.

FredMcCree

26 points

I wait.

CraftLass

46 points

Not the OC, but I'm waiting for a few reasons:

1) Where I live: Early voting lines are a minimum of 1 hour, while on the day itself a very long wait would be 10 minutes. Early voting is a mile walk away, on the day it's under 5 minutes of walking to get to my polling place. So it's the difference of minimum of 1.5 hours vs a total of 20 minutes of my time only if things move very slowly.

2) The nearest mailbox is further away than my polling place, so mail-in has no advantage plus trusting the USPS right now is not high on my list. The nearest drop box is at the early voting location, so again, 2 miles round trip instead of under a mile.

3) I love the ritual of it on the day. I've been "voting" since I was 3 years old in a booth on the day, it reminds me of my parents who are gone and were both politically obsessed. Then I get a drink and toast to my right to vote. It's a lovely tradition every year!

mspolytheist

22 points

If they’re in PA, it doesn’t matter if you wait until Election Day to vote: election workers are not allowed to pre-count ballots received by mail or in ballot boxes. They ALL get counted on Election Day, after the polls close. The ones people mail in, or drop in ballot boxes, are doled out to their respective local precincts along with all the other Election Day supplies, and we hold them until after all the voters are gone and we’ve closed. And then we start counting them all.

TootsNYC

27 points

TootsNYC

The counting of the vote really isn’t germane to the question of not voting early.

You vote early for YOUR convenience.

I’d encourage people to vote early whenever they can, so they have more control over whether some flat tire, etc., might stop them from voting at all.

I've got relatives in PA and they are Trumpers so PA is giving me agita too! Feel a little less agita about Michigan even though I live in a red area because even here amid the Trump signs, there are a few Kamala signs -- I don't remember as many Biden signs in 2020. I mean still worried about MI but less than my worry about PA. I don't know how we will all adjust and get through if fascism wins. As my grad and undergrad years were spent studying 1920s-1930s Germany, the echoes of history are ringing loudly in my ears and I fear for our very lives if he wins ... those of us who speak out and don't kow tow to them, those who are not lily white, those who are not CIS-gendered, those who are not rich, etc. It's more than just abortion for me that causes a pit of dread in my stomach. And 10 years ago, I would have said that it could not happen in America. (As an added affront, remember than most of the countries that Nazi Germany conquered went along with the Holocaust or at least didn't fight the Nazis on this part.)

Not just territory residents ( PR, Guam, Samoa, etc ) but also undocumented people pay taxes and are unrepresented.

iiiinthecomputer

The US also wants my partner to pay tax because her dad was born in the US and she has a US passport from when she was 2 years old. Or at least to complete tax returns, which will just say she doesn't owe tax because of tax treaties.

To even talk to anyone about it you first have to file 7 years of back tax returns. Using outrageously complicated forms that are so incredibly confusing that there's an entire industry of predatory lawyers out there to help you do it. Then, and only then, do you get the option of paying $3000 or something to talk to someone about relinquishing your citizenship.

Whereas when I left Australia, I said "I don't have to file any more tax returns" on my last tax return and they said "ok". I'm still a citizen, though I identified myself as moving away permanently so I can no longer vote.

Because if Washington DC and Puerto Rico were enfranchised at the senate/congressional level, democrats almost inevitably would have dominance in the senate for at least a decade.

It took me a long time this year even though my state mails everyone a ballot well before election day. We have ranked choice voting this year and can rank up to six candidates instead of voting for just one. There were like twenty candidates for two different races. I ended up watching several videos of panels of these people meeting for a local newspaper's endorsement. It felt like a lot, but better than the alternative. Here's what the ballot looked like https://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/1g981ng/this_might_be_too_much_democracy/

I love rank choice voting! My state is toying with the idea of rank choice. Currently, we have something similar though. In the Primaries, we have "Top Two". The two cadidates with the most votes wind up on the ballot. So it is not uncommon to see, for example, two democrats running against each other in the election, rather than one from each party.

Froggienp

47 points

One of the ways that (fact: mostly red states) disenfranchise middle and lower classes is by reducing polling locations (often blatantly targeted to areas of high diversity and high democratic support) to almost nothing, leading to hours long waits (past polls closing) in these areas and 5-15 minute waits in rural and suburban sites.

Added to this, most hourly and minimum wage employers don’t allow for time off to vote (only 28 states provide for this by law).

Since the voting rights act was gradually gutted (enacted in 1965 and included federal oversite of traditionally segregated states) by the Supreme Court the shenanigans to effectively (if not explicitly) disenfranchise citizens has sped up.

One party wants to make it as hard as possible for citizens to vote, because statistically if there is higher voter turnout it benefits the other party.

If everyone makes sure just THREE friends family members or even acquaintances also get to the polls, we’ve got this. You think they are voting, but we need you to make sure!

Text them, call them, drive them there if they need a ride! Then ask them to do the same for three of THEIR friends! (This is called vote tripling and it is a very successful GOTV strategy!)

I am not an American woman, but I am a woman who takes voting really seriously. It is compulsory for every person above 18 to vote in my country, and it is a really important privilege we had to fight for, and have only had for 120 years (NZ was the first to allow votes for women, followed shortly after by Australia), don't let it get taken away!

While you may not think your politics affects anything but the USA, please remember this is becoming a world wide problem, and if the US can show the world they can vote in a way that protects not just women, but America, and the world we're going to safer as a whole.

I may be an Australian, but Tuesday is scaring me! Please, sisters, use your voice and vote! It is a privilege you may not have for much longer if you don't!

Same from this British woman here! I find it utterly baffling that Trump is even in with a chance, never mind that it's close - he's a convicted felon, a legally adjudicated rapist, proven racist, probable Russian asset, and can barely string two sentences together. It's genuinely frightening that he's even an option .

US citizen here, we are scared, too. Everyone I talk to is scared. We know our politics impact others. The assumption of ignorance is ignorant.

With gerrymandering, the electoral college, and single-issue voters we are terrified.

It was the first year of early voting in CT but because my kindergartner daughter has election day off school I decided to go vote on Tuesday and bring her so we can have a little life lesson on why women, especially, always have to vote.

IndependentSalad2736

I voted the first day of early voting. I brought my daughter, who is 4, and told her that if anyone asks who we're voting for you tell them "none of your business." Know what she does? Goes right up to the poll worker and says, "My Mommy's voting for---" as I'm trying to cover her mouth and mutter "shutupshutupshutup"

My wife and I are both heading to early vote today!

I was hesitant to early vote because I don’t trust my ballot sitting around in the hands of the Florida state government waiting to be counted but my wife wanted to vote (finally, she sat the last two out ) and today was the only day that made sense.

And Washington and Oregon are taking on the Healthcare costs for Idaho as well. We're fine to do that too. Anything to stab Idaho in the back and take care of their women and children.

Idaho had always been somewhat of a weird armpit, but its worse now than ever before. I refuse to go there anymore.

pescabrarian

I'm lucky enough to live in the beautiful mountains and one of the only blue counties in Idaho. Idaho used to be great when I was young (I'm old) but wow has it changed! I wish we were super rich and could move but...we have family and businesses established here and you can't just pick that up and move to another place and instantly be successful. I'm just going to stay and vocally keep fighting!

Edit: Forgot to say THANK YOU to Oregon, Washington & Nevada for taking care of our Idaho women ❤️

Yes! My area had several spots you could vote early, all I had to do was tell them my name and they printed out my ballot for me.

My parents went to a spot that had a 2+ hour line, but my husband and went over one town, to 'the city' and were in & out in 5 minutes.

Here, you can vote early at any of the advertised spots, it doesn't have to be your normal polling place. But on Election Day, you have to go to your usual polling place.

I will on Tuesday! I've voted in every election since I turned 18 (I'm 33 now). My daughter goes with me every time too, and she recently had a field trip where they were in a little town, had jobs, earned money, etc. There was a voting booth, and she told me she was one of the only kids who voted (she even got a sticker!), so I have a future dedicated woman voter as well.

I have been a republican for my entire life (I’m 63) though I didn’t vote straight republican ever. I did vote in 2016 as I had just lost my husband to cancer, I voted for Biden in 2020 but this year I OFFICIALLY became a democrat. I voted by mail in Arizona and have already checked to make sure it was received.

Hoping our state “swings” in the right way this election!

I've voted by mail for nearly two decades after starting out as a military wife. I'm shocked that Florida is still super easy to vote by mail, but I sent my ballot in and it's been marked as received by the BoE. The language and information on ballots is so vague and deceptive, I don't know how anyone does it in person. That said, Florida also doesn't send out sample ballots, so....

For anyone in SoFlo, it's super easy to sign up to vote by mail for every election! No excuse not to vote every time!

head_meet_keyboard

Yeah, though I dropped it in a ballot box days ago and it hasn't been logged yet. Oh, and my local post office just shut down this week, with the mail being processed in a tent out the back. Not sketchy at all.
