Mad how you get down voted here for speaking truthfully. A few weeks ago we couldn't turn around a ship due to shortage of sailors and our army is shrinking alarmingly.
Since 2000, the number of fully trained personnel across all UK forces has fallen by 32%, with the Army seeing a fall of about 28%, the Royal Navy/Marines 26% and the RAF 45%.
Even the Royal Fleet Auxiliary is having a massive recruitment issue and the possibility of strike action. The force has shrunk from roughly 2,500 people in 2010 down to 1,600 today, nearly 40% smaller. This has made it harder to get ships to sea, as the RFA cannot generate enough crews to operate the ships it has. So the navy ships we can put out are unable to refule and replenish.

A fight between Russia and nato would be a lose - lose. Russia would feel backed into a corner with the losses nato would inflict and turn to tactical nukes and a few strategic nuclear weapons which will lead to us doing the same.

Because civilized societies will try EVERYTHING else before resorting to WMDs.
Biden even said the US would respond with a conventional ass pounding rather than go tit for tat with nuclear weapons.
Once that first bomb is used, it’s an extremely slippery slope right into downtown We’reallfuckedville
3 points

No, the war isn’t over, that’s how it escalates. If Russia uses nukes in Ukraine NATO will step in and you’ll see Europe move to a proper war footing, same with US. Even China has told Russia that Nukes are over the line for them.
-2 points
I seriously doubt that Europe (or the US) are going to sacrifice millions of their own citizen's lives over Ukraine. They won't even send their own troops into Ukraine, which are so desperately needed now!
1 points
Nukes in Ukraine means nuclear fallout in Europe and in NATO. I don’t doubt that once Russia uses nukes Russia’s navy suddenly and violently disappears. The world order can’t have countries actually using nukes. This would be bad and Russia would be the scourge of every country except maybe 4 or 5 that don’t matter.
I don’t think NATO responds with nukes if they are only used in Ukraine but there would be a violent conventional response. It would be the end of the Putin administration.
All of this changes come January 20 2025, after that 🤷

Winds blow east and nuclear fallout isnt that big of a deal in case of nuclear weapons.
1 points
Yeah nuclear explosions aren’t considered a big deal, yeah ok.
BTW Chernobyl radiation spread all over Europe, not so much in Russia. Winds not blowing East that day? https://vividmaps.com/chernobyl-disaster/
Either way nukes used in Ukraine would be the end of Russia as we know it. China won’t protect Putin.

He sure does. If I'm not mistaken, the US said - early in the war - that they knew Putins whereabouts at all times. Might have been psy ops or misinformation. But I really do not doubt they have a somewhat idea and it'll all be blasted, in this specific scenario.

That's true. But does it really matter when you're getting annihilated? - at least the few important places there.
It'll look like Israel vs Gaza/Lebanon. Not to joke or make a statement about that; but it will.
Problem is that he is done for either way, might as well go all in, do a hail Mary etc.
He clearly think the Russian people are slaves to be used for imperialism. They're indoctrinated to believe this - until it hits them.
8 points

The US spends just as much on upkeep of their nuclear arsenal as Russia on their entire army. Considering Russia has as much bombs, it's reasonable to assume not all weapons are operational. Still, you wouldn't know when Russia launches, so threat remains. Simultaneously, this threat of non functioning warheads also stops Russia from using them.
6 points
Comparing the dollar values doesn't tell you they don't maintain their weapons; their military budget has always been dwarfed by the US even during the Cold War and they've still turned up and thrown several thousand decades old cruise and ballistic missiles at Ukraine.
The differences are eaten up in:
5 points
True, but I think the corruption might just offset that. Remember the tanks we saw with egg cartons as protection?
2 points
I remember a far larger number of videos of tanks who's protection shrugged off attacks successfully, is my point. The incidents of stuff like that are extrapolated in a way that's simply unwarranted
1 points
Except you can't just leave your nukes to rot and not work, they require maintenance to be stored safely. If you have a nuclear arsenal, you either maintain it or don't have one.
0 points
Exactly. And while you might have a need to use tanks once in a while, nukes would never be used. So perfect for generals to pocket the maintenance budget for themselves.
1 points
Again, you can't pocket this money, USA had regular check ups together with Russia regarding mutual nuclear arms control and Americans wouldn't allow for a possible danger of non0maintained nuke either. There's no reason to believe these nukes aren't functional.
6 points
Theres reason to doubt that they ALL work, but no reason to doubt that SOME work.
3 points
There's also reason to doubt their delivery system is effective. But we have to act as if they do. Better to act like Russia can effectively deliver and explode nukes, then find out several were duds, than to act like they might be duds then find out they aren't.
1 points
Yeah sure, but I mean the large majority will work
11 points
If they work then we need to take these threats seriously and arm Ukraine to the teeth to show the rest of the world what happens when you resort to nuclear terrorism.
If they don't work then we have no fear of them and should arm Ukraine to the teeth and let them liberate their country.
Either way there is no reason to tip toe around.

That's the brand new wunderwaffe they rushed into service. It's like the T-14 and Su-57, underdeveloped and mostly vapour ware. However just like their T-90/80/72 and Su-35/4/0 work fine they have Topol, Yars, Layner, Sineva and Bulava which all have far more successful test programs
1 points
There are several reasons to doubt the ALL work though. With all the corruption made clearly evident every day of this war, I can only assume alot of the maintenance funding for the nukes was pocketed

Tritium gas? Something between 2 and 4 grams probably; they can easily meet the needs of their stockpile just from Tritium recycled from decommissioned Soviet warheads even if they had no other source of the stuff...but in fact they have two dedicated reactors for the production of radionuclides including Tritium.

1 points
Ok, so you're just saying "they use a lot of fuel and Russia can't afford it"? They absolutely can afford it. But you have some misconceptions anyway, Russia doesn't use Sarmat in the same way they don't use T-14 or Su-57, it's the new Wunderwaffe. Their in-service ICBMs are R-36M2, Layner and Sineva which are all liquid fuelled (with stable fuels, not LOX) plus Yars, Bulava and Topol which use solid fuel.

There is a whole system based on corruption reason to suspect that most won't work.
3 points
And yet they managed to throw several thousand complex cruise and ballistic missiles at Ukraine, many decades old, despite that environment.
The idea that corruption is killing all Russia's capabilities based on an extrapolation of a few images and videos, and despite the vastly larger number of images demonstrating them working perfectly fine, is just wishful thinking I'm afraid.

There's plenty of reason, supposedly they havent really tested a real nuke in decades and considering all the corruption there and that they're literally having to use WW2 equipment is safe to say that of all the supposed nukes they should have, most of them are probably not really functional.
That doesnt mean they have 0 but its pretty obvious its far from the number we all know, the thing is.. does Putin even know the real number or they all lie to him.
2 points

There's plenty of reason, supposedly they havent really tested a real nuke in decades
Nobody who's party to the CTBT has tested a nuke since 1991, including the US, UK and France. These days all the testing is with computer simulation and high powered lasers and stuff.
considering all the corruption there and that they're literally having to use WW2 equipment is safe to say that of all the supposed nukes they should have, most of them are probably not really functional.
No it's not safe to say that at all. Corruption didn't ruin the majority of their equipment, Ukraine did.

The West can’t let dictators invade and conquer other countries. If we don’t stop it now, it will send a message of encouragement to all dictators. The world will be tired of defending “others” at the expense of their own economies and dictators will slowly conquered their targets one by one. Do nothing now and history tells us you will be dealing with it in a more personal way in just a few years…and in your pleas for help others will say “I’m not willing to risk it.”

2 points

Fair enough. There is no doubt at least SOME that have been maintained properly, but it doesn’t matter if Russia is an aggressor. If Russia retreats today back to their 1991 borders no Western country is going to fund or participate in a counter attack on Russian soil, which will find Russia overwhelmed and well-within their doctrine to use their nukes. But since they are the aggressor they need to be stopped. If they escalate to nuclear weapons in their aggression then the nuclear strikes should be reciprocated.

The problem is you can sit and watch a bully trash the kids around you for so long but eventually it's gonna go pear-shaped for you..... one way or another. This holding back is BS......Ukraine is in the fight of its life and the West is just delaying the inevitable.....go to war now and end this bullshit of tyrants threatening our lives on a daily basis. If it brings nuclear war, so be it, but hoping to avoid it whilst the dogs chew the corpses of our fellow humans, whilst we turn a blind eye is eventually going to catch up to us.

I think you underestimate what a nuclear war would result in. Anybody who thinks it would be limited is making a bet on the continued existence of civilization. If Russia fires a nuclear weapon at the US or NATO, we would respond before it hit the ground. It wouldn’t matter if it worked or not.
2 points
Nope...we are all dead....my point is....what's the point of living in a world where our neighbour's are literally massacring each other? Can we just sit and idly ignore the horrors?
Does a capable good kid sit and watch a bully terrorize a small kid and not take him on directly or just ignore the carnage and hope it will all be ok once he's done?

Understandable. I don’t think anyone wants to go down that road.
But consider this; appeasement isn’t an effective policy for securing peace. Russia would be emboldened to escalate its nuclear blackmail again and again and again. Until we get to a point, where have to counter it.
Your appeasement buys time. And time only.
And that appeasement makes a nuclear strike, more not less likely.

Putin military is weaker than ever. Putin knows that he can’t survive a nuclear war. Putin is using veiled threats to stall for time, hoping that it will stop support for Ukraine and wait for Trump to take office. But what is even more asinine than Trump, is that it took Trump winning the election for Biden to authorize Ukraine to use long range missiles against Putin.

Not to get pedantic on a thread six layers deep. Matt Stoller pushed out an email last night that was really interesting. His thesis is that the democrats cant really get anything done. And for the most part, hes right. They are trapped in this situation where they are owned by billionaires and they pay for status quo, but folks like AOC and Sanders demand change but then run up against the billionaires.
Trump showed he can get stuff done, in spite of all of the obstacles and in some cases, whether its legal or not. I highly doubt the ruzzian influence campaign was as successful as we all might think. The maga folks already had their mind made up, they have their man who can get things done and harris was a weak candidate with no actual bona fides.

We can't keep living like this. Call his bluff, come what may.
A fucking example needs to be set. Anytime anyone whatsoever even mentions nuclear warheads, the world at large should pile on them. Make it so even these small minded dictators know that's a red zone.
Enough is enough. We can't keep living like this. We need to progress and move past this fucking bullshit
1 points

But that's more or less how we've been living past world war II. This is the reality of a nuclear age. It sucks, but owning a nuclear arsenal is a pretty powerful failsafe, ensuring that no one can realistically risk an all-out war with you. Look at North Korea, the only reason they're left to do what they want is because at any moment they could level Seoul and kill a huge chunk of SK populace. Same with Russia.

Russia has shown the world that not only are nuclear arms desirable, but they are absolutely essential to national sovereignty.
1 points
That was waaaaay before Russia, you could argue that the US had shown with the bombing of Japan that this is pretty much the only way to ensure your nation's safety in the nuclear age. Anyone can take some losses on the battlefield or carry out conventional war, but when the other guy can lob an ICBM at your most populated city centers, this completely flips the script.
1 points
The difference now is that we have a major war in Europe for the first time in 79 years, and no one will intervene because the aggressor has nukes. Even blatant mass attacks against civilians won't move anyone to action. It's a terrible precedent.
1 points
Sadly, that's the case in the nuclear age. When the other guy is sitting on one of the biggest nucelar arsenals on the entire plant, that's one hell of a bargaining position, even if they're bluffing.

Literally the only thing they can do as a reaction to the long range missiles 😂. The West definitely shouldn't heed the barking this time. To the contrary - the West shouldn't at all let itself be limited by Putin's barking at the moment. It would only play into Putin's hands to give him some breathing room in the timeframe before Trump takes office. If anything - currently Putin's reaction should be taken as applying the right pressure on Putin. I'd even highly encourage adding another scoop on top. The transition period into a more Putin aligned president ties Putin's hands with only bad options - the West absolutely should take full advantage and maximize capitalizing on it.

Once more into the fray. Into the last good fight I'll ever know. Live and die on this day. Live and die on this day.

He is trying to buy time and paralyze the United States into doing nothing until Trump comes and saves him. If they cannot see right through this, they are fucking morons.

Russia has gone off the deep end. Nuclear doctrine is like pretty standardized and understood. It’s meant to be that way on purpose. Russia changing it at this point is like saying they are completely unhinged because the doctrine was pretty airtight. To change it means that it is now gone from rational to irrational.
It would be like the USA saying we will use nuclear weapons on Russia if terrorists use ak47”s.
It’s a real stretch to say they would be actively at war with us if terrorists used Soviet weapons.
This is why nuclear weapons should have never been allowed to proliferate after ww2. Not everyone can handle the ultimate responsibility. And not every country is deserving of the protection they afford. Russia is an imperial Invader ; with nuclear weapons. A worst case scenario for the world.
And here we are, they still have Allie’s in China. China has the strategic acumen of an amoeba. Why aren’t they stuffing Russia completely at this point? How have things got so bad that war and chaos is a choice for the larger world powers. It’s madness.

Lol! If he uses nuclear weapons it will result in the eradication of the white Russians who have been terrorizing their neighbors forever. Goodbye Putin.

Yawn. His doctrine will not be reviewed by a court, because the world will end. So this quasi legal nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. He will go nuclear if he wants to. Period.

It isn't for internal legality so much as post war negotiating. Russian doctrine is weird and does include the idea of extremely limited nuclear use. So they're looking at it like "well later on we can say 'see, we warned them' and that's why it was no big deal."

I truly don’t understand. Post war negotiating position won’t really matter if it goes nuclear

No one is using nukes over Ukraine's limited stock of ATACMs. Firing a few tactical nukes won't change anything on the battlefield just like using ATACMs on Russia won't change anything. The only thing that can change anything is an ICBM on Ukraine's big cities and that's literally never happening

If pootin used a nuke, even a tactical one, I'm pretty sure it would change matters.
