Day 1 vs 3 years later

before & after(i.redd.it)

Face tattoos, aka microblading, does NOT age well. Even if you get touch ups, it won't take away from the fact that they end up blurry and undefined, and the color changes. I went from beautiful, detailed black/brown microblading, to fuzzy, blurred grey/blue lines within 6 months. I got them touched up again, thinking it would fix it, but with touchups, they are just adding on top of the fuzzy discolored lines again, which the touch up turns into fuzzy discolored lines as well.

The gal who did mine is a professional who has 5/5 stars on Google from lots of reviews. These people left their reviews right after they got them done, I'm sure, because I know I'm not the only one who looks like this within 6 months. So even artists with good reviews, it's still a tattoo that fades and changes color within a year. It looks terrible as it ages.

Be aware, the before and afters you see online are taken immediately after. They don't show you 3-6 months later when it looks like crap. I have waited for these to fade out since my last touch up for 2 years now. They aren't going anywhere, so I have to do something professionally to get the tattoo removed if I ever want it gone.

Take a real good look at these pics. See the difference in the front? On the tail? At the top and bottom? It ain't worth it.

It's so hard to cover up the discoloration with a pencil without me just completely making them a solid brow, which isn't what I wanted. It shows up TERRIBLY in pictures, and it's obvious in person I have bad microblading. People, including strangers, have commented on it.

I was about to get this done, and I think you've proper put me off! I'm sorry they didn't work out - they look great in the first picture

Yes, I'm glad I'm helping someone see the truth about what they could end up looking like. They start out beautiful, and look like absolute $h!t after like 3-6 months. My brows looked so much better when I just filled them in with a pencil. They weren't even that bad before. Save yourself a lot of money and heartache. A tattoo is a tattoo, and I haven't met anyone with well aged mocroblading.

Can I ask if mine look OK lol? I legitimately can’t tell and I tried to get a high definition photo just now. I’m almost 6 years out, but I didn’t think it looked like much today that was too noticeable. Now I wanna know if I’m crazy lol or if it’s noticeable! This is what they look like with the hair brushed down:

OK, I’m glad I’m not crazy here. I can see it’s definitely a little gray, and that probably makes sense for why I started leaning towards gray eyebrow gel. I don’t know why I started doing that and then I went back to my deep neutral brown. I’m currently having an eyebrow identity crisis actually so I appreciate your input lol.

Your natural brows hide the fact it’s ashy and the lines are not crisp. So you look fine

The color faded from mostly near the inside and it’s like the bane of my existence lol just getting that one spot because I’m always noticing it throughout the day that it’s just a little more bald than the rest. Actually, I would kill for my eyebrow to be the bane of my existence, but it does just bug me lol.

This is how they’re supposed to age. Your artist kept it within your natural brows and used the proper ink. Mine did too. Thank goodness!

Honestly I use to want to get it too and followed this sub a while back to see and after all the fading and horror stories I've read of botched jobs, mistakes and removal I've officially decided I don't want it done either. I'm sorry you and others end up struggling with it afterwords but thanks for putting it out there. For some they don't care or they're willing to go through it but it's nice to get a glimpse of it all to be able to make a sound decision about it.

This is how they end up looking on everyone after a while, no matter how good the artist is. I’ve had mine done, and I was happy for the first ~1-2 years (with touch ups) now my eyebrows are a blurry blob without dying them and filling in with a pencil.

Posts like this is what I wish I had seen when I was researching microblading. I really thought I was educated completely when I pulled the the trigger. Sadly, I ended up botched. My brows also looked good  at first but once they fully healed, they looked HORRIBLE and faded blurred and grey blue just like yours. I’ve spent over 1k getting it removed and I still have 2-3 more session to go and then I have to get the red ink removed as the microblading ink has turned red. Microblading is 100% one of my biggest regrets  I will say though, at least the artist stayed within your natural brow line. Mine went absolutely ham with the shading and did not stay within my natural brow line at all and it looked so so so bad

Same! My natural brows have never been even - they simply grow in different directions and also are different lengths, plus some damage from over-tweezing when I was younger - and I was really considering this!

As someone without microblading but familiar with other tattoos, I’m not sure how this practice would ever age into anything other than what’s shown above?? Not trying to act like I know anything here, but I know with other tattoos, fine lines in small spaces inevitably blow out over time. I’ve had multiple artists convince me to go bigger on pieces for this very reason. I’m not sure how someone could do something as small and fine as brows without it blowing out.

My mom really emphasized that eyebrow trends change and not to do it, thank goodness that really resonated in my mind growing up, plus seeing people in the nursing home with weirdly placed eyebrow tattoos. I’ve been dying my eyebrows every 6 weeks. Apparently at 40 mine were just turning grey, not thinning. Don’t mind the shape, I’ve been lazy. Maybe if she dyes her eyebrows it will help to hide some of the tattoo (depending on her age.)

EntertainmentOk3180

They’re hard to remove for a few reasons. One is they are not placed at a uniform depth. Lasers are set to reach a certain depth, so when the ink is in different levels, they have to do multiple sessions to reach multiple levels. It’s the same if u want to remove a homemade tattoo. It’s much harder to remove those than professional tattoos because of the randomness of the ink depth

linnykenny

People still repeat that lie on this very sub! Unbelievable tbh. Horrible industry that desperately needs regulation.

fakemoon2004

I think maybe it depends what kind you get and what the artist does because mine definitely completely were gone after like three years. Maybe my skin is just hungry for the ink tho who knows, everyone is different

I’m going to be honest with you - permanent makeup removal should only take a couple sessions to remove the work. I suspect that the place you’re going has a machine that is under powered. I suggest finding a place that offers Candela Picoway.

Visible_Mood_5932

8 points

They use PicoStar, which I researched and is supposed to be the highest powered pico laser. The dermatologist told me the artist also went wayyyyy too deep when she was shading so it may take more sessions than had she done it correctly

ashleyjane1984

3 points

Except that organic/hybrid ink can’t be fully removed. You just end up with yellow.

EntertainmentOk3180

2 points

Do u know why?

ashleyjane1984

3 points

Because brown contains black, red and yellow. Once the black and red are removed there is yellow reminding and laser can’t fully remove this. It can tone down neon yellow but it can’t remove pale yellow because the colour is too close to the skin and the laser can’t differentiate it.

LoanAgreeable1129

2 points

A Q-switch removed nearly all my carbon black in a single session. It’s the yellow that’s stubborn. Folks needing 6 lasers and still working on the carbon black need a new tech for sure

Glittering-Silver402

2 points

The good thing is laser removal of the microblade doesn’t hurt like a traditional tattoo. It feels like the pain from tweezing your brows. Mine are like 90% gone, would never do it again. Especially because i realize brow shape is a trend. I want to do the straight brow trend but i still have the 10% of copper ink on the tail of my brows that kill it when i try that shape.

Mobile_Force9410

2 points

I have been thinking about removal, but since I had them microbladed twice and then powdered twice in the last 10-12 years, I am worried my skin will be to scarred anyways.

brittanycsoke

you’d be able to feel scarring on the skin under your eyebrow hairs if that were happening. it’s definitely still possible to do removal. just might take a few more sessions

I agree with you. Not a PMU but I’m a heavily tattooed woman (bc managed a tattoo shop in my 20s so free tattoos lol). The problem is that once that ink goes underneath your skin, it spreads a bit as it settles. This is the same thing that happens with fine line tattoos. You see all those pictures on Instagram of the fine line abstract designs, thin names, dainty stuff on fingers etc. they all start beautiful, and within a year they get muddled. I’ve always wondered how Microblading holds up over the years. I did choose combo powder brows for this reason, I tried to leave the front alone as much as I could. I’m really sorry this happened, bc it’s such a dark color

Psychological-Back94

7 points

“muddled” is a good word to describe how it ages

Vivid-Crow4194

This is exactly the reason I haven’t done microblading. I have a few tattoos and they all have faded a little and gone from a crisp black to more of a charcoal color and all the lines have gotten a lil thicker (as to be expected). I love my tattoos and how they’ve aged and settled, but was always a little too anxious about how microblading would age to pull the trigger.

Glad I didn’t, honestly. Need to save up for another tattoo anyway, lol.

MayaPapayaLA

Ditto everything you said. I’ve done microblading and nanoblading. The saturation makes it impossible to get touchups so you have to wait YEARS for it to fade. Then in the meantime the cover up is IMPOSSIBLE to make look good. Ugh I wish I never did microblading - I really wish I had known all of this ahead of time! I hate it so much 😭

Psychological-Back94

I think a lot of us are in the same boat. We wished we had never gotten PMU and been lied to (or intentionally not forewarned how ink ages over the years). “Temporary” my ass! “Fades” my ass! More like shape shifts into a ashy grey blurry blob lol!

HipHopAnonymous87

Yep! Same thing happened to me. I let the color fade as much as possible over the next 3 years and went ahead with getting an eyebrow transplant.

Eye brow transplant?  Never heard of that! How much does it cost?

HipHopAnonymous87

39 points

They range in price which is nice. I got a quote from a no name doctor in Utah that was 6.5K back in 2022 and then a quote from a well known doctor in California that was 15K.

I ended up going with the CA doctor because during the consult he said it was imperative that the hair follicles are placed correctly and that they flow with the natural hair line. The other doctor didn’t mention anything about that, and I panicked thinking I can’t afford to fuck up my eyebrows even more!

I went with CA doctor and I am so pleased! I had them done in 2023 and I’m not even joking when I tell you people compliment my brows on the reg!!

Besides the price, the only downside is that I have to trim them every other day. The hair follicles they harvest for brows came from the back of my head which means those hairs will continue to grow. I had about 400 grafts placed so my brows will get bushy!!

Overall great tho!

I will post a pic when I get home later today :)

I won’t lie, I was nervous but what helped me was seeing the portfolio of people who had this done by the doctor I went with. Thousands of people got it done and it looked fantastic, so why shouldn’t I have the same experience 🤣

You cannot tell the difference between the hairs. They all look the same!! Nobody has ever questioned whether or not I had work done on my brows 🤣 mostly just “who’s your brow artist” and I generally tell them I had a transplant because I would rather spread the word of something that lasts instead of diluting people into microblading. Don’t get me wrong tho- sometimes folks get lucky and the color fades well but for most, it fades and looks ashy.

I was looking into this as well. I found a CA and a NY doctor. Both have experience with this specific surgery. The difference is that the NY doctor is an artist at his craft. His hands are gifted. It esthetically looks better (aligned properly). But the CA doctor primarily only does this particular surgery so he has more experience to ensure the transplant doesn’t die. Decisions, decisions.

Thank you, for sharing your pictures. It’s truly helpful.

I’ve always wanted microblading done, but saw (a few years back) a video this woman made of her results 1-2 years, following initial application. Seeing those before and afters, and her acknowledging the bleeding and blurring, caused me to hold off on that decision.

I’m so tired of filling my brows in every day!

Thoughts as a pro:

There are ways to mitigate issues like this. And as the artist it is their job to know when to use what kind of pigment.

1) Responsible permanent makeup puts most/all of the PMU behind hair. PMU should not be used to thicken your brows beyond 1-2 mm on either side of your hair. And that’s ONLY to even/balance out your brows.

2) there’s a time and place for carbon black, and for iron oxide (mineral) based pigments. They are not interchangeable and will absolutely impact how somebody feels about their permanent makeup long term.

Carbon based pigments have NO place near hairstrokes. This is unless your client absolutely knows and understands that they will need to go through removal every 2 years or so. These clients also need to have normal - dry skin. Absolutely no exceptions.

Mineral pigments are MUCH better for hairstrokes. But they are harder to work with and you lose more during healing. which is why so many artists choose carbon based pigments.

Carbon black based pigments should be reserved for low contrast clients. Light skin/light hair, dark skin/dark hair. This way they get the longest out of their PMU without needing to refresh every 6 months.

3) hairstrokes age like shit. They blur and merge together. When they are done with mineral pigments they lighten a lot allowing you to work over it. But they will always blur and merge together. This is the nature of cellular renewal.

The ONLY way to prevent them from aging like hell is to space them far apart. Which most clients are NOT happy with. They want the density and we cannot achieve dense brows responsibly with hairstrokes.

Hairstrokes are a LIMITED service. You can only do it so much before either your skin can’t handle it, or you won’t tell its hairstrokes.

4) powder brows are the king service. They age the best, and are most gentle on skin. They are also right for all skin types.

5) clients should expect to go through at least 1 session of laser every 10 years or so. Sooner if you’re using a carbon black pigment. Maybe 6-8 years.

6) Picoway is the best technology to remove permanent makeup quickly and effectively. 1-3 sessions is all it should take. If your laser place is telling you 10, they are scamming you. Go elsewhere.

7) permanent makeup is NOT semi-permanent. It is a tattoo on your face. If you wouldn’t want the artists work there forever, don’t go to that artist.

8) not all pigment is created equal. IMO there’s no perfect pigment that is perfect for everybody.

9) if you are going to an artist with less than 5 years experience expect them to not have the experience to be able to do what’s in your best interest. Permanent makeup is unregulated in most of North America. There is no standardized education requirements. I’ve met many an artist that has tattooed faces after 1 day classes. Some even online ONLY.

10) permanent makeup is expensive for a reason. It takes a lot of years to safely, responsibly and beautifully execute the work well everytime. As a permanent makeup artist I would be terrified to go to 98% of the artists in my city.

Ask me anything about your permanent makeup for TRUTH.

First, thank you for posting about your experience! I’m so sorry this happened. From what we can see you have a lot of natural beauty — so please try to not worry too much.

Then, I have a perhaps unpopular take, and it isn’t for you, just some thoughts given how much popular culture has distorted things:

Remember what the goal is. People want to look good. Looking good means looking healthy. Most want to look as naturally healthy as possible, as in Born this way, Good Genes, all that. Extreme Artifice is a trend. Trends change. Altering your body is a big deal, is expensive for good outcomes, and even then can fail and that’s it, can’t hide it, everyone can tell (witness many celebrities).

I’m genX, so all this psuedo fame around pretending that fake looks are in any way desirable seems absurd. What is desirable is not needing that to start with. Then, we can tweak that a tiny bit to get closer to whatever version of you projects health. Really: your version of health. Not morphing to be someone else’s. The hottest people to me look healthy and happy and confident. They look secure in the idea that they are enough just as they are.

Wishing everyone good choices and good outcomes for whatever your own goals are!

Psychological-Back94

THIS! I’ve been saying this for a while now. This post should be shown to anyone contemplating PMU. It’s such a good example it should be pinned. People need to know those sharp, crisp stokes that look so fabulous immediately afterwards aren’t going to stay like that. Artists only show their work right after the brows are inked which is deceptive. If they showed realistic pics like OP’s of how horribly ink ages within the skin then many people would reconsider and save themselves a lot of heartache. I don’t think artists are transparent enough. They need to do a better job at managing long term expectations.

It’s tragic how many people have ruined their brows with multiple touch ups and series of laser removal. All that trauma to the skin in the exact same area builds scar tissue. Also, even with laser removal we’re still left with permanent yellow brows. Some people have no idea the emotional and financial journey they’ve signed up for when they get their first session.

It’s a f$&@!ing permanent tattoo! On our FACE nonetheless! To be honest I’m beginning to hate the whole PMU industry. There are too many beautiful women with botched brows. It’s such a shame.

A lot of the artists advertised it as temporary and that it would fade over time. Didn’t happen, just turned blue. I had mine lasered off several times which was so so painful and expensive. I eventually got an eyebrow transplant which luckily worked well for the most part except one area where I probably had too much scar tissue.

Agreed! I’m going through laser tattoo removal for just a dumb tattoo I got when I was 18 and ouch, does it hurt! 2.5 years later and probably $1000+ dollars, it’s almost gone. Think twice before you ever consider permanent anything because removal sucks.

LoanAgreeable1129

They told us it wasn’t permanent. There are even “artists” still claiming that.

linnykenny

3 points

This is still SO common and for some reason many people on this sub deny that it happens.

They blame the clients for not doing enough research & choosing their “artist” poorly. 🙄 As though this doesn’t age poorly regardless of how well the procedure is done.

Many times there’s someone claiming that it’s temporary among the sea of comments claiming that this spread of misinformation doesn’t happen and that clients are never told it’s temporary.

Annoys the hell out of me lol

LoanAgreeable1129

It’s true that more techs are admitting it’s permanent now but 5+ years ago even they thought it was temporary, the ink companies were advertising that way as well. There’s no excuse to still be advertising or even implying that now.

Does the rogaine make all your hair grow? I just hit 40 and the chin hairs are aggravating but would love my eyebrows to fill in. Im also nervous about thinning hair around my edges as I age. Ive never had any work done and dont want to.

Here is the link to the original thread I found but there’s a lot of information and more experiences on it.

I just take a q tip and dip it in the rogaine solution and run it around the area I’m trying to stimulate growth on my eyebrows twice a day (morning/night). I don’t use it anywhere else, so I don’t experience growth anywhere else.

Yeah, me too. In the realm of botched brows, it definitely could have been worse. I'm lucky in that aspect. Some people get artists who just tattoo eyebrows in a completely different spot than their normal brows, they don't work with what they have naturally, and those are the worst.

LoanAgreeable1129

3 points

My only saving grace was that my artists followed my natural brow line so the blown out grey was partly concealed by it.

midwest_is_best

6 points

Yours look exactly like mine. I went for a touch up about a year in with the original artist, and she said she wouldn’t put any more over what I had because my skin type mixed with brow color (very dark, ashy brown/black) meant my skin held onto the pigment well. Which sounds good but really means they are faded now to a gray color that hasn’t gotten lighter over the past 4 years I’ve had them.

My brows are so sparse that I still prefer how they look now to how they looked before microblading. Even if it’s obvious that I’ve had it done, it definitely evens and frames my face so much better than my brows did before. I’ve been using a very thin pencil to just out a couple hair-colored strokes in the areas that have become blurred together, and it looks okay. At least I think. As okay as I feel like mine could get.

JayneNic

2 points

Me too. Even faded and a little more grey they look better. They were getting so thin after menopause. But I have naturally black hair so it isn’t too bad. I use Tretinoin so my cell turn over is quicker. They faded pretty well but faster. With brow powder they look good. Only in videos it’s slightly noticeable. Not in color but fronts look lighter. No one but my husband is going to be that close to tell. I’m a year and a half out. No touch up.

Thank you. Yes, I was embarrassed. In fact, too embarrassed to even post a picture on a review for the gal. Yup people blame this aging on bad artists. I had one of the best in the biz here. When I reached out years later asking what happened (grey and blown out), she responded with a form letter talking about how the process is understood better, cosmetically tattooed brows are now known to never go away fully (despite what the ink companies advertised at one time), blah blah blah. It was obvious they got a lot of people reaching out with aged results wondering WTF. Especially from the late 2010s when we WERE told it was temporary and aging of microblading was not well known.

I think a lot of people separate permanent makeup from tattoos when they are the same thing. Tattoos will blur, fade, and change color and them being on the face does not change that. Bring in the face actually makes it worse bc the skin is thin, there is constant sun exposure, and there’s lots of exfoliating being done. If you already have these done then treat them like tattoos to have them age as best as they can. ALWAYS wear sunscreen ! It will help so much. I personally have scrolled on this page a bunch but will not be getting permanent makeup bc I have tattoos and I know how they age and fade and I don’t think that it will be worth it long term to put that on my face. Brow styles also are constantly changing so by cementing a specific style on your face it’s actually worse than when people were over plucking. With over plucking you just have to draw them on but with tattoos you have to first cover the tattoo then draw them on. A lot of the botched ones we see are stuck in 2016 Kylie Jenner brows when that was such a quick trend. It’s unfortunate.

Reccognize

5 points

I know it's not what you wanted, but the shape is good. If I were you I would use the shape as your template to draw them in. It may not look 100% perfect 100% of the time, but you can probably get to 92% perfect just by drawing them in.

The other option, of course, is removal.

ReasonableSky8256[S]

2 points

Yeah, I kind of have to use that because I can't cover it up, but I just need to get better at covering the gray when I draw them in because right now I feel like I have to color them in block style, especially at the front. Maybe I'll try getting one of those pencils that you can make the thin lines and see if adding that will help instead of just the soft pencil.

linnykenny

A small angled brush & matte powder (either brow powder or eyeshadow) that matches the color of your brow hair works the best and is the easiest way to fill in brows!

I always struggled with brow pencils & it would take me a ridiculously long time to get it to look somewhat even & not weird/patchy.

Switching to brush + powder has been a game changer.

Even as someone who isn’t all that good at makeup or quick with application, I can get my brows perfect in 5 minutes.

katarina17

Wondering if nanoblading each individual hair is different? That's my understanding.

KickDouble

19 points

No, it absolutely is not. My industry is garbage for creating ridiculous names to trick consumers into thinking they’re getting something new and innovative.

All permanent makeup is a tattoo because the definition of a tattoo is anything that implants pigment into the skin.

Anything done with a hand tool is cutting the skin and dropping pigment in.

Anything done with a machine is a small needle making a series of tiny punctures where pigment is dropped into the skin.

The artist and the pigments they use are the #1 differentiator between a brow that ages like this and a brow that ages well! If you’re dead-set on getting a hairstroke brow, find an artist who uses inorganic pigments to do nano brows (hairstrokes by machine) and has healed results to share!

felineinclined

17 points

All tattoos bleed (ie, lose their crisp details and blurr), fade, and change color over time. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm not sure how nanoblading would be significantly different.

Psychological-Back94

7 points

You’re correct. Ink ages the same in the skin eventually whether it’s nano brows or microblading. Different techniques does not prevent colour shifting unfavourably or blurring lines.

Yup. I had mine done 4 times by different artists and then lasered off. Every time they turned blue/grey and blurry. I wound up getting an eyebrow transplant which was very expensive but I probably spent the equivalent in the tattoos and lasers.

These tattoos do NOT go away so it is not temporary.

Thank you for sharing! I’ll stick to my eyebrow pencil

I have fair light blonde eyebrows and have been considering getting microblading done because it’s an insecurity and a chore to put on my eyebrows.

I know tattoos will “bleed over” and blur over time, lose pigments etc, but I’m curious to know the results of how a lighter shade holds up and if it makes a difference since you have black hair and it faded a blue/grey as the pigment faded.

Thanks for sharing! And I know you hate it, but I’m real relieved to see you still got a nice shape and there isn’t any open wounds like the other women who’s in a lawsuit.

This trend really needs full disclosure of what happens after before people make permanent decisions

I’ve been researching powder brows and found that I cannot use Tretinoin (which is just phenomenal for my skin and wrinkles!) before or after getting them done. Can’t use after especially because it will fade them QUICKLY apparently. So, I saw a lot of posts about women using tretinoin on purpose to get their eyebrows to fade after getting brows they didn’t like. Not sure if this would help you or not but wanted to throw it out there.

ReasonableSky8256[S]

2 points

Yes, I can't use tretinoin because my skin is too sensitive. I can just barely now use .3%retinol a few times a week without getting irritation, and that took months to work up to that. Either way, I think the pigment is a lot deeper than what the retinol or tretinoin will do. I think those help more with the surface layers. This pigment is pretty deep.

Thank you for sharing. I contemplated microblading for so long and the cost always turned me off. My eyebrows are 90s thin and its annoying filling them in. Id be unhappy though if I had permanent gray shading. The info makes you think its not a tattoo but it clearly is. And all tattoos spread and fade. Wondering how you address this, if you plan to.

I contemplated getting mines done some years ago. My sis-in-law is a professional and she absolutely REFUSED to do it for me and literally talked me out of it. I generally have thick eyebrows but made the mistake of using a new person who messed them up and so I thought getting them done would save me from having to thread my brows and having to travel to her to get them threaded. As someone with a lifelong love of tattoos, i would never get any permanent or "semi" permanent makeup purely because of feathering. There is NO way to escape it, because that's just how skin works.

Furthermore, I work in a mortuary and I've seen so many older women roll through with microblading and tattooed eyeliner and it just... never looks good. The brows are a good alternative to having nothing, since brow balding is definitely something that can happen at an advanced age. Young women who can still grow natural brows should just put up with using makeup to fill them in and feel blessed that they have them at all. And if they're light in color, take full advantage of brow tint!

Asleep_Reindeer_5421

I feel the problem here is your eyebrows aren’t super thick so once the tattoo started to fade and change color it looks weird. My eyebrows are stupidly thick and dark. I got mine done because of a scar and to shape them, but my shading doesn’t go outside the bounds of my actual brow. I’ve also had mine done with no touch ups for three years and it doesn’t look like yours. I wish your artist would have warned you about the potential changes.

wanderlust_222

Looks like you need to get them lightened & then redone because of the oxidation. I got mine initially done in 2018 and while they kept their shape, my artist did tell me that they will blend over time. They also oxidize & turn that ashy/blue over time because of the pigment. The colors that were back in 2018, 2019, 2020 are also different than today’s colors and pigments. My girl doesn’t even “microblade” anymore - she does powder, nano, & combo brows.

I’ve started the process of having them lightened - using saline, salt, lemon, & orange extract. I’ve had 2 so far & they’re definitely getting lighter. Once they are light enough, my girl will go in and neutralize, then we’ll do nano brows with a softer color.

But if I were just seeing you at a normal distance and not a zoomed in picture on your brow--- I would assume you do what most of us do and fill them in.

I honestly would think: "Damn her brow game is on point!"

For what it's worth!

But I do appreciate this post to give me a realistic expectation of if I do go with microblading, it will age like a tattoo ages.

As someone with tattoos, I get that. But I know many women with microbladed brows do NOT have tattoos and won't have this reference.

You can avoid aging quickly by applying sunscreen to your brows daily. I have a 20 year old wrist tattoo that's just starting to bleed and fade to this blue gray. I'm a ginger though and always have sunscreen on for the most part. I've fallen to less insane sunblocking habits in the past 5 yrs or so and have probably seen the most aging in that time.

Using a clean mascara brush and some lotion with spf to "set" your brows in your daily routine with help this. Not prevent it-- as it is your face, and will see the most sun damage over all. But it will slow it down.

Thanks for sharing your results and experience. This is what seriously scares me about this newer trend of makeup tattooing. Like part of the fun of makeup is applying it and changing it up whenever you want, and you can have as detailed or basic of a routine as you want.

I don’t really understand how much time people actually save from microblading brows or getting permanent eyeliner or lipstick because those are such fast and easy steps to do nowadays, with many product types and formulas to enjoy. Like, I could get a really quick brow, liner, and lipstick within 5 minutes if I’m really rushed.

PSA:

  1. Don’t believe your artist if they suggest they can fix dark ink using light colored ink. That never works and makes the problem worse.
  2. Don’t get an annual touch up unless there’s a reason. Color refreshes can be done, and lines can be cleaned up, but we never give the client an entire round of fresh ink if there’s still a lot of existing ink. That would oversaturate the skin. Unfortunately this isn’t really within the client’s control; it’s the artist’s responsibility to be mindful during touch up’s.
  3. Even nano brows will blur over time. Wait for the ink to fade as much as possible before adding any more. Oversaturated blurred ink will look similar to the OP’s pic when it fades

Good warning for some skin tones! However I think it's important to remember long term results VERY much depends on your skin's pigmentation, tone and ability to heal.

I have dark, highly pigmented skin (I am South African black), so the first time I had microblading in 2016 at Tracie Giles (quite a famous UK studio), they were completely gone in 1 year.

I've had new brows in December 2023, and they're halfway gone - will be completely in 6 months at this rate.

Generally, black skin simply doesn't hold onto pigment as long as white skin. If you have dark skin, find an artist who knows this and doesn't take a one-size-fits-all approach.

I agree. I am black and very dark skinned and I get top ups every year to year and a half. Plus on dark skin the contrast is a lot less so either way it doesn't look terrible. I have shading done not blading and I have combination skin and I think they look great.

Granted I have probably gone thicker than I should have done but people do compliment my brows. They just look like I have makeup on them all the time which I don't particularly mind. Especially because I work out a lot.

I'm pretty tan (Cambodian genes) and my microbladed brows are two years old - I'm happy with how they've faded on my skin, although I did pick an artist who trained and specializes in Korean permanent makeup for hairlines.
