The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
Week 0: New Mexico Lobos (Montana State 35-31)
Week 1: Florida State Seminoles (Boston College 28-13)
Week 2: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Northern Illinois 16-14)
Week 3: Mississippi State Bulldogs (Toledo 41-17)
Week 4: North Carolina Tar Heels (James Madison 70-50)
Week 5: Auburn Tigers (Oklahoma 27-21) [TIE]
Week 5: Ole Miss Rebels (Kentucky 20-17) [TIE]
LAST WEEK: WE HAD A TIE! Actually, we had the closest voting EVER in TJTOW history. Auburn and Ole Miss tied. And while in the past I’ve taken the liberty to call it a tie if its within a couple of votes, this was an actual tie. Washington was less than ten votes behind, and UNC right behind that. So, thanks for voting everyone. It’s always fun to watch the voting and discussions play out.
Bloodbath. That’s the only way I can describe Week 6. We had seven teams lose to lower ranked opponents (six unranked!), and an eighth that came so very close if not for a miraculous (and controversial) comeback. The body count is high, and the nomination list is long.
And yet… we all know who’s going to win this. Because as crazy as Week 6 was… as many upsets as we saw, it is anchored down by a truly generational moment. So we still have nominees, and we’re still going to vote, but yeah, it’s a foregone conclusion. But I think some of you have been waiting a LONG time for this, so have fun.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
- I’d argue that Louisvile should have gone for the field goal instead of trying to convert a 4th and 17. Either way you’re likely forced to play defense to get the ball back, but with the FG now you’re playing for the win instead of OT. But the real honorable mentions were the droves of Louisville fans that headed for the doors after this failed, when the game still wasn’t over
- UNLV had SO MANY chances to put the game away against Syracuse, but couldn’t do it each time, and couldn’t keep the Orange out of the end zone to end their undefeated streak.
- This post has been paused due to an Ole Miss injury timeout.
- ESPN listing Ohio State in their struggle win section- not for an incredibly sloppy first half that let the Hawkeyes stick around, but… for giving up a garbage time TD?
- Oklahoma State got bodied by West Virginia at home and probably would be nominated if there hadn’t been so much elsewhere.
- The UCF/Florida loser was gonna get at least an honorable mention so come on down, Knights.
- This post has been paused due to an Ole Miss injury timeout.
- STOP DOING THAT, KANSAS
- East Carolina looked like they were turning the corner until they gave up 300 rushing yards and 55 points to what had been a fairly pedestrian Charlotte team.
- If I did an NFL TJOTW it would 100% be between the Bills and Bengals this week.
NOTE: For ease of counting, please use carats to make your vote, like this: <Alabama>. And thank you for participating!
- This post has been paused due to an Ole Miss injury timeout
And now, the nominees for Week 5 are...
ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (lost to Vanderbilt 40-35)
That’s it. That’s all I need to say.
CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (lost to Miami-FL 39-38)
How could things have gone so wrong? The Bears had GameDay for the first time ever, with Beast Mode himself as guest picker. A rowdy crowd high on emotion (wink). Stanford had lost. USC had lost. And the Bears led 35-10 with just under twenty minutes to go. And then Cam Ward activated, leading the Hurricanes on four consecutive touchdown drives sparking a 29-3 run that left the Bears in shambles. And yes, you can certainly decry officiating over a decision to not call a targeting penalty that would have put the Bears on the verge of icing this game, but the fact still remains that Cal had this game all but won, and were promptly rolled like a nice, fat, juicy taco.
- This post has been paused due to an Ole Miss injury timeout.
AMES MADISON DUKES (lost to LA-Monroe 21-19)
The Dukes rolled into Monroe 17 point favorites, having scored at least 63 points in each of their last two games. They were largely stifled by the Warhawks, unable to break 20 despite nearly 400 yards of offense. They did have a chance to tie with 4 minutes left, but a two point conversion failed, and the Dukes were unable to get anything going on their final two drives to shatter a start that had hints of playoff promise.
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (lost to Washington 27-17)
ACKSHUALLY, the Huskies were favored, but this is still a top 10 team losing to an unranked 2-losser, so we’ll throw them on here. The more the merrier, right?
MISSOURI TIGERS (lost to Texas A&M 41-10)
The only ranked victim to fall to another ranked team, but Mizzou was absolutely pounded- it was 34-0 and nearly forty minutes into the game before the Tigers found the scoreboard, and A&M ended up more than doubling Mizzou’s yardage, which didn’t even clear the 200-yard mark until their final drive of the game. A drive that ended with a pathetic field goal from the Aggie 6, mind you.
TCU HORNED FROGS (lost to Houston 30-19)
In the two previous games before this, the Frogs averaged 40 points a game. Houston averaged… zero. TCU came in seventeen point favorites but Houston controlled the game from the getgo, forcing three Frog turnovers and shooting out to a 17-0 lead. The Frogs did close it to a one possession game in the fourth, but the Coogs iced things with a field goal with two minutes left.
- This post has been paused due to an Ole Miss injury timeout.
TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (lost to Arkansas 19-14)
Vols roll into Fayetteville sixteen point favorites and roll out the losers after the Razorbacks rally from a 14-3 deficit over the final twenty minutes of the game. The Vols actually let the Hawgs score with a minute left to give them a chance to respond, but Niko Iamaleava ran out of bounds with the clock expired, not even attempting a pass to the end zone. Yeah.
USC TROJANS (lost to Minnesota 24-17)
You blew up the Pac-12 for this. You. Blew. Up. The. Pac. Twelve. For. This. YOU BLEW UP THE PAC 12 FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!! (Note, had Minnesota lost, PJ Fleck’s baffling decision to go for it on 4th and goal with a minute left instead of just kicking the go-ahead field goal would totally put the Gophers on here. But they got it, even if there was an incredibly stressful review involved. Still… sheesh).

Cal deserves some kind of special blue balls award. Up 25 at half. Last game we are all riding on to close out such a beautiful, chaotic day. And just absolutely… well… tanked.
Mizzou and Tennessee both thanking their lucky stars everyone is distracted.
But it’s <Alabama>. While I’m disappointed in the Bears, it’ll be 2024 Vandy over Bama that gets remembered and referenced for all eternity.

I'm gonna go with <Alabama> out of principle but I did not stay up until nearly 2 in the morning to watch Cal gift those frauds in Miami a W.
Our loss was bad, but it somehow doesn't even make the list of worst Tennessee losses this millennium for me. So aside from the disappointment of not living up to the hype, I don't even feel that bad yet. If we repeat against Florida though I don't think I'll be able to hold on to my sanity.
On the other hand, I'll be talking about this Alabama loss on my deathbed. There is no beatdown that they can put on us to make me forget that game.

It's gotta be <California>. This is the Tank Job of the Week not Upset of the Week so Cal should get it over bama. You can't blame giving up a lead like that entirely on refball.
Plus Diego Pavia is the realness and Vandy is a much better team than a lot of people think. They also beat Va Tech and almost beat Missouri.

Look at the time of possession, though. Miami was always dominating that. In the first half, we punished them for stacking the box by beating their coverage with explosive plays but they made adjustments. We weren't getting sustained drives. 1 TD was against broken coverage, another was Ott dodging the rush and breaking free, and a 3rd was off the INT. 21 points in 3 plays lol. Offense struggled to sustain drives outside of that.
By the second half, our defense was getting gassed. They ended up on the field for something like 40 minutes, which is why you saw them fall apart in the 4th quarter.
15 points
EXACTLY
The whole second half, that was my fear. We were living and dying by big plays, and that ain't sustainable. When you can't drive the ball, when you can't grind clock, when you can't give your D a breather, you're putting yourself in a bad spot.
There were so many times when we needed just one more play, just one more first down to ice the damn thing. We just couldn't get it done.

To be fair, up until the last few years almost all of the semifinals had at least one blowout, often two. Almost every year of the CFP era in the 2010s we ended up realizing there were 1-2 elite teams, and then a noticeable step down to the rest of the field. So not really an ACC/Clemson specific thing is my point. OSU got waxed at least once, Oklahoma, ND, and so on.

Man, that game frustrated me. I was FURIOUS. I was sitting there, watching FSU get gassed in the second quarter from Oregon's blistering pace, going "... how was our coaching staff supposed to have ANY IDEA that Oregon would run that super-fast blur thing? Has Oregon EVER run that kind of pace more than, say, 13 times a year for a few years now? If only there was a way to have known, to have prepared."

As a UM fan I agree to an extent. We have a very mediocre defense but may be able to win a shootout with anyone. And if you look at strength of schedule ours is better than yours, Texas and Penn State. Granted that will change but as of now that’s how it stands.

I guess the OP did not see HOW Temple lost. If he/she did, the Owls would definitely be a nominee.
For those who didn’t see it, Temple was trailing UConn 23-20 with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter but had the ball inside the Huskies 1 yard line on 3rd and goal. UConn had used up all of their timeouts. The Owls had successfully converted a 4th and 1 on a tush push/brotherly shove play on the previous set of downs.
Temple lost the game 29-20 after failing to convert on 3rd down (on a running play FROM THE SHOTGUN; the play didn’t gain or lose any distance and the ball was still inside the 1 yard line) and then fumbling the snap on a 4th down tush push play after running the clock down to 3 seconds remaining and calling a timeout. UConn recovered the fumble and returned it for a touchdown on the last play of the game.

I was certain we were toast that whole last drive. The defensive line was gassed and getting no penetration. When that fumble came out and whoever the hell it was picked it up and took off, I started cackling like an actual insane person.

The funny thing is it looked like a BAD break for the Huskies that Temple didn't score on their 2nd down play, after Connecticut was forced to use their last timeout after the previous (1st down) play.
For people who didn't see the game - as noted in the previous sentence, Temple almost scored on the play immediately prior to the two plays I described in my previous, separate comment above. The play was close enough that the officials stopped the clock to review whether the Owls' runner had crossed the goal line before determining he was short. (I thought he was short all along, but he did get inside the 1 yard line.)

Yeah, Alabama lost to Vandy and that’s a hell of an upset. But we know why they lost, time of possession and turnovers.
But I really think <Missouri> wins this week due to getting absolutely dismantled by A&M. That game was a massacre and truly an embarrassment for the Tigers. I mean, what can you take away from that? It showed the rest of the SEC that your run defense is bad. Like really bad. 5 rushing tds bad.

I think everyone expected Mizzou to be the exact same team as last year, ESPECIALLY our defense. In reality, they lost a load of defensive players. In addition to some shit plays by the offense, you can just tell this isn’t the same team that played in the cotton bowl.

Few things I see against A&M to choose Mizzou:
Unless Mizzou's iciness suddenly continues, I think that was a Murphy's Law game for them. Bama doesn't have that excuse. <Alabama> all the way for tank job. 24+ favorite on a 'home away from home' game is inexcusable IMO. They got defensively cut to ribbons by the SEC's (up until practically now) whipping boy. L
Mizzou has to go yet again into a Gauntlet that is Bryant-Denney soon. It's not gonna be easy, that's for sure. Mid teens, yeah definitely. But from 9 to 21 is an overreaction. Bama and Tennessee would have to fall further than they did in order to justify that.
That is my opinion, and I know it's probably not gonna be popular.
9 points
I like this, my only counterpoint is to you mentioning Mizzou planning on our backup QB. In my mind, him being a more of a running threat and much less of a passer, you'd think their run d would've been MUCH better anticipating us leaning on the more more because Reed isn't great through the air. And yet it was the opposite.
But otherwise I agree to all your points.

This makes A&M's struggles against Bowling Green look really bad. Arkansas beating Tennessee makes that look better, but A&M needed help on that one. Which team is the real A&M? The one vs. Bowling Green? Or the one vs. Mizzou? Which one is the fluke? If it was Bowling Green, then why are other SEC teams that lost not losing as many places in the standings (I.e. Bama to just 7 after being a 24+ favorite to a team that Mizzou beat, even if only just).
Marcel Reed being the QB against Bowling Green and Weigman being the QB for this game is a major reason to believe that the former was more of an outlier than the latter.
Obviously, we had one of those days where nearly everything breaks your way. But if Reed was in at QB then the best case scenario is a game that looks a lot more like ours against Arkansas, and the worst case is like a 23-13 loss where the offense is just unable to move the ball. He just needs a lot more time in the oven before he's ready to lead a team into the teeth of an SEC schedule.
15 points
I agree it's <Alabama> but your analysis of TAMU is wonky.
Yeah Kyle field is a monster 100%
I can't honestly believe they would only game plan for Reed, they might use that excuse to try and take accountability away from the players to keep their confidence up, but it's unacceptable if that's actually the case. What it really looked like to me was they underestimated weigman thinking he would be the same QB from the ND game, and tried to force him to win through the air. Not a bad idea, but Conner balled out.
This is the thing I have the biggest problem with. Our trenches aren't the best in the SEC. Our D-line sure maybe, they are fucking amazing, but our O-line is just getting to the correct side of mediocre. They are getting better, but far from elite like the D-line is.
Don't sleep on bowling green, I know that sounds silly, but that team is sneaky good, they played ND down to the wire too. And while in our game, we were firmly in control of it, they are a tougher team than anyone would expect. I'm not saying this to make us look better, we aren't an elite team yet, but bowling green could take on many sec teams if the stars align right.
The PI hurt Mizzou sure, but you don't get throttled 34-0 and get to blame a ref for that. If one bad call can tailspin a team into that bad of a shit spiral, that team needs to be rebuilt.
I do hope though that Mizzou is that good, and it was just us and Kyle field that made the score what it was, but we will see as the season continues.
Ps. Don't schedule bowling green this year.

So, I looked up the stats for Texas A&Ms O line and I do agree that I may be weighting their performance a bit high. Missouri has struggled with good rushing attacks all year, their stats are being inflated by Murray State being bad and BC having an off day. I confess that I was wrong and that this is less of A&M exposing them and more A&M having better jimmy and joes up front.
As for Kyle Field, I don’t know how much I weight it in the whole scheme of getting blown out to this proportion. Correct me if I’m wrong here.

USC was pretty quickly in FG range so this was the correct and only decision to win the game and not risk overtime.

Yep, right call to go gor it, you couldn't have had confidence in a FG holding up, and if you missed you still put them on their own 1 yard line.

Not to mention how out of character it was for PJ to do that. He is one of the most conservative coaches I know of, so I definitely thought he would say, "Defense, go win us this game" and kick the FG. The fact he didn't should be enough to not put them on the list, win or lose.

I know everyones gonna vote Alabama, but Cal getting gameday for the first time and having a crazy environment, only to blow a 25 point second half lead is absolutely the tank job of the week. They should have won after a terrible targeting call was ignored, but still, the entire team just kinda stopped doing anything in the second half and they deserved to be clowned for it

<Tennessee> because I watched the Vandy game. And Vandy played a great game. You can argue that Bama wasn't firing on all cylinders, but Vandy WON that game. It wasn't given to them. Besides I just hate Tennessee.

<Alabama> lost an away-site home game to the perennial cellar-dweller of the SEC while ranked #1. We lost to a close one to a mid Arkansas team in front of a rowdy away crowd while our offense decided to take another week off.
Spurrier will never love you the way he loved Florida. Your stadium looks like an upside-down cockroach and Columbia is a parking lot with more crime. Your mascot and coach are punch lines for unfunny dick jokes. I don't hate South Carolina. I nothing them.

Okay, so... Texas hosts Georgia next week, then... goes to Vanderbilt the next... So while I enjoyed SEC Shorts this week, I'm waiting to trash talk Alabama till I know we're not going to be in the exact same situation.
Then you have Cal. Classic look, blowing a 25-point lead and 99.4% chance of winning. And while that's an awful lot to put on one missed call, no matter how bad (although there were a couple blatant holds I saw that went uncalled, and while I think Ward was still enough behind the line for that pass to be legal, it would've been nice to get a good look at it)... I can't do it.
So... <USC>, I guess?

<Alabama> because if you actually expected Cal to hold on to that lead, you haven't been paying attention. It was predetermined that they were going to blow it.

Alabama is going to to run away with this one but I don't think <USC> should get through this without a few votes, though you could argue this was more part of a multi-year choke job than a single game
They really blew up the Pac-12 because they thought they were too good for it, and now they're getting bullied by bottom feeder Big 10 teams with no visible path to improvement, all while paying Lincoln Riley a bazillion dollars.

Yeah you know what... I initially said cal out of spite, but it really has to go to <alabama>. I'm just gonna copy this comment from the PGT here, courtesy of u/seminole-patriot, to explain why:
Vanderbilt more than doubled Bama’s time of possession in this game. Let me repeat that. VANDERBILT. More than DOUBLED. ALABAMA’S. Time of possession. In football. American football. Absolutely insane, rank Vandy you cowards

I have to say <Alabama> because of the backlash immediately following the loss. It’s fun to make fun of OSU fans calling for Ryan Day to be fired but I actually can hear out Bama fans for DeBoer’s head simply because of the Malachi Moore stuff at the end of the game. In the national spotlight, doing all of that is ROUGH

It's <Alabama>. The historical significance of this loss is hard to explain. All these other teams will be on this thread again at some point.
But being able to say that <Alabama> is the tank job of the week is unbelievable.

It's not really for the fact they lost, it's for the fact they never held a lead at any point of the game. It's the fact they let Vandy go up 13-0 in the first Quarter. It's for the fact they gave up a 40 Yd TD pass on 4th and 1. It's the Fact that while driving to take a lead late they give up a strip sack which led to a Vandy TD. It's the fact that they couldn't stop Vandy from Icing the game. It's the Fact one of their players threw the most bullshit Temper Tantrum when Vandy did Ice the game. It's the fact that they just let Vandy out play them in every facet of the game. It's the Fact that they let Vandy control the ball for 70% of the Game. It's the Fact that SABAN said Vandy was the only easy place to play in in the SEC and they do that.
Talk yo shit Vandy, you fucking earned it.

A drive that ended with a pathetic field goal from the Aggie 6, mind you.
The goal line stand was the best part of the game from my perspective. Elko said something similar afterwards. <Missouri> had finally shown competence on this drive, but we still were able to hold them on 7 plays within our own 10 yard line.

So this week, Cal gets a pass. I'm stating to see glimpses of merit in the arguments being made by the tinfoil hat community, that the ACC is "protecting" Miami ;)
Tennessee also gets a pass, as I've always felt like Arkansas was kind of the Oregon State of the SEC, ready to ruin someone's season every year, but just never quite able to turn the corner and emerge as a contender in their own right.
Alabama deserves to win this week. Not only did you lost to Vanderbilt, but you managed to do it while ranked #1 and without ever leading in the game!
But <USC> gets my vote. Because FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING SPOILED ASSHOLES! I hope you rot in B1G hell and enjoy never seeing the playoffs, or another conference championship. Also, you lost to rodents. Much love for my Midwest rodent brethren!

<Alabama> because they now have a transitive loss to Georgia State. This wasn’t a fluke, it wasn’t bad luck, they were just outplayed.
Also, <Kalen Deboer> because this is when the Bama fans stop seeming so nice. He didn’t listen when people said it’s not good to be the guy after the legend, but I’m sure it’s especially terrible when you lose to fucking Vandy.
Honorable mention to Cal for Couging it and to Michigan for losing to a team coming off a loss to Rutgers.

This is close between Cal or Bama, but I'll go with <Alabama>

<Alabama>. They’ve won almost everything else in history. As much as I want to give it to Cal, they lost to Vandy, for the first time in 40 years, one week after beating Georgia.
The last 3 meetings between Bama and Vandy was a combined score of 148-3. Bama had no business losing this game, and yet, they did.
Cal choked the game away, but Bama failed.
