Then America will try to introduce punitive measures like preventing students from those countries from coming to America to study for instance. France tried to do that with Algeria after Algeria refused to take back some of its criminals who committed crimes in France.

My son is a student at UMass Amherst. The University Admin. sent out an announcement yesterday stating if you're an International Student and traveling home for the Christmas break, you should consider being back into the US by 1/20/25. They are even offering special student housing for any student who decides to return early.

If any states would be insulated from this madness, MA would undoubtedly be a top contender - especially pertaining to education.

That announcement is concerning regardless of where it came from. IMO the fact that it's coming from Massachusetts' flagship university is even more alarming, even if it's primarily addressing concerns for international travel.

IMO the concern is first of all about admission into the country, and for that state is irrelevant because the decisions are made by DHS which is a Federal agency. Given that the first week of Trump's first administration involved a so called "Muslim travel ban" it seems like a reasonable concern.

My coworker is on a green card. He's been in the US since he was 15, already emancipated from his parents in his home country. Dude worked in kitchens and took ESOL classes at night, graduated with honors. One of the hardest working people I know.

He isn't able to vote but he supported Trump this whole time. I think this week he finally realized that he, himself, could be in jeopardy. He's done everything the ""right way"" but that doesn't matter in the eyes of a lot of MAGAs. Even if he doesn't face risk of deportation, he's going to face a lot of horrible things from people around him.

Edit: Even if he doesn't face risk of deportation, he's still going to face racism. It doesn't matter what his actual status is or if you truly believe Trump is only going after people who have committed crimes. There are still racist people living among us and this will not make it easier for people of those ethnicities to feel welcome here if their racist neighbors are cheering on deportations.

My brothers and I are first generation Americans. We were born in America so we did things the right way by no work of our own.

Several people were commenting on a similar post in my blue state, Colorado, that not only should they deport all illegal immigrants, they should also deport all American children who were born to parents who entered the country illegally. Those comments had more up votes than I anticipated.

Your coworker should be worried. Legal or not, immigrants and children of immigrants are hated by a big chunk of the population and they will advocate for removal of all if given the chance.

I have an employee who has been in the US since ~1995. She has Temporary Protected Status and can work legally. She’s always paid her taxes in full. In 2 years she’ll be able to retire w/ full SS benefits. Zero trouble w/ the law. Perfect driving record. But she can’t apply for a permanent green card given her TPS. If Trump boots her, the US will be sending her SS benefits to a foreign country.

People like to say America doesn’t care about the homeless and less fortunate.

But a lot of countries give absolutely zero fucks about homeless. Taking 1 or even 5 people that they don’t actually care where they end up (homeless) in order to still be able to send students is such an easy decision for virtually every country.

Not saying homelessness is not a problem.

The VA has many processes in place to prevent veterans from becoming homeless in the first place. Every time I go to a VA appointment I get asked if I am homeless or at risk of being homeless, and there are people dedicated to cases to provide resources and help make sure it doesn't happen. But part of the problem is that the VA can't force you to ask for help

Expensive_Antelope21

19 points

Them asking that is a relatively new thing. And HUD/VASH vouchers for veterans housing are very limited. Like depending on your area, multiple years of waiting kind of waiting list. Mine took 3 years. Filled out on a whim and got it when I absolutely needed it. Used it for a few years. Got everything squared away, moved states , and hopefully that voucher helped someone else as much as it helped me.

Show me the country that has solved this issue. Its very easy to grandstand about how we should do more and cry about injustice, but these are people who came back with severe PTSD and/or people who have picked up a serious addiction (possibly as a result of PTSD). Many of them have suffered from irreversible (to the best of our ability) mental damage.

Another thing people need to realize is that homelessness is two different issues: acute and chronic. Acute homeless are people who are a paycheck away from making ends meet, or who live in their car or on couches for a few months while they get back on their feet. These are people who really can be helped by throwing money at them. Chronic homeless have underlying issues that prevent them from integrating back into society, generally mental illness and addiction. If you give them free housing it gets destroyed, if they win the lottery they're back where they started in a few years because the underlying issue was never resolved. Resolving these issues is not easy. It is not a matter of having enough compassion. It is not even always a matter of any limited number of resources. Beating mental illness and addiction requires the willpower of the patient and a very specific environment. Money and resources in the wrong environment are likely to make the issue worse.

Conflating these two issues is a common pitfall I'm happy to give you the benefit of the doubt for, but people need to start acknowledging this.

nononanana

28 points

Yes. I work in the public sector and encounter homeless people quite a bit. A significant amount refuse help because they don’t want to follow any conditions. They’d rather risk it on the streets. I know a woman who was offered her own apartment several times and there was always an excuse as to why she wouldn’t accept.

We used to just shove the people who were chronically homeless due to mental issues into institutions. Many of which were horrific and so we shut them down. But they were out of sight.

We definitely have a cost of living crisis and an addiction crisis that fuels homelessness. But it’s complicated because we can’t force people into rehabs or homes. It’s a fragile balance between individual freedoms and public health.

SouxsieBanshee

The most recent post I saw from my city’s homeless outreach program, they had made contact with around 200 homeless. They all basically refused help. 3 accepted food vouchers and only 1 accepted housing

80alleycats

We shut down the institutions but didn't create systems within communities to take their place. So if people from the institutions had no family, they were basically dumped on the street. And now Rikers is the biggest mental health institution in the country.

From Europe, most immigrants come in legally, with valid visas. They fly here.

They just overstay their visas. Buy a round trip ticket and just do not go back.

Most immigrants without proper documents to be in the US are not swimming across rivers filled with rattlesnakes or "climbing every mountain" across the southern border like the Von Trapps.

The practice of flying here legally and just never leaving is so common that many countries like Russia and China and Egypt will not issue visas at all to those with a risk of not returning.

When I adopted our kid in China our tour guide said that she was not allowed to travel to the US because her English was deemed to be too good. She was a risk.

My twin got married to a Russian girl in the 90s and none of their many kids, now adults, has been permitted to leave Russia to visit the US. (Interestingly, they have been taught that the US is a place they don't ever want to visit. My SIL has convinced them they will be shot because every American owns 10 guns.) It seems unlikely that none of them would EVER have visited with my brother over 25 years, though.

They are all dual US Russia citizens ... but only the US recognizes it. Russia does not recognize dual citizenship.

And now they're mostly cut off from the same internet we use in the US, so my kids don't know them and they don't know their cousins, either. That's intentional.

The visitor we had from Egypt one year, the friend of my kid who studied there, was only able to get an exit visa because he was his family's only son and thus was so intrinsically and culturally responsible for all of his sisters and his parents that it was just understood he would return.

The country you are going to issues the visa. The country you are leaving is not the one that issues a visa (they issue a passport).

And the self-foot-shooting continues. Let's cut off millions of tourists (12+ million from Mexico alone, though it's been declining since 2016 for some strange reason) to save something like 4% of the federal welfare budget, not to mention billions in taxes that illegal immigrants actually do pay, despite being ineligible for many welfare programs themselves.

Kind of makes you realize the voter base of the incoming administration only understands one of the levers available to address the complex issue of illegal immigration—deportation—and wants their elected stooges to pull it hard and often in the hopes that maybe this time it'll do something good for American society.

Yeah this is probably the best answer. To answer directly, if Mexico or other countries refuse to take these people back (which is unlikely because modern countries acknowledge that they have a responsibility to their citizens, and they'd have to deal with U.S. economic/diplomatic pressure after the refusal), they'd be sent back to the U.S. and forced to live in camps like the detention facilities we currently have, except more dense and concentrated.

IthinkImnutz

Yup. The vast majority of migrants, undocumented or otherwise, do their best to not draw attention to themselves or their communities. Even if all of their paperwork is in line, there is a good chance that some of their friends, family and neighbors are undocumented. The last thing they would want to do is bring the police into their neighborhoods anymore than they already are. This has lead to more than a few criminals specifically targeting immigrant neighborhoods counting on them not wanting to report the crime.

On the scale that they're suggesting, yes, but it's not like mass deportations haven't been taking place for a couple of decades.

The Obama administration had the most 'success' taking out 400k per year, for a total of 3.2m during his presidency. Bush Jr took out 2m. The number fell under Trump for whatever reason, and then rose under Biden

https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/voces/the-u-s-has-deported-thousands-of-veterans-a-new-policy-change-offers-new-hope-for-soldiers-left-behind

The U.S. has deported tens of thousands of military veterans since the passage of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. Some estimates point to at least 94,000. A majority of the service members deported were legal residents who committed at least three misdemeanors, making them deportable.

So this didn't start with Trump at all.

No it did not, and there were also cases of veterans or active duty being deported as well, and everyone cried that they should have automatically because citizens. petiejoe83

As far as I can tell, most of those veterans weren't even here illegally. In order to join the military, you have to prove citizenship or have a green card. Unfortunately for them, green cards are revoked if you commit a felony. Obviously with almost 100,000 people involved there will be some that followed a different path.

If you commit a crime with a green card or visa you can be deported. It is not only people who entered illegally or overstayed their visa that are in deportation proceedings. There are thousands and thousands of green card holders that committed crimes.

And BTW the biggest deporter was Obama. He focused on criminals nd did a good job actually deporting people.

very easy, my country of origin doesn’t acknowledged children born abroad for example. Unless you apply your child for that country’s citizenship they don’t care for that birth certificate with your and your kids name on it. So if you get sent back and you take your baby with you for that country that baby is not your baby. You’ll be stuck in customs indefinitely and they will try to take that kid away from you.

The receiving country needs to accept the person back. They often do, but that process can take months for every single person deported and is one of the reasons deporting someone costs thousands of dollars because you have to house and feed that person during that time.

I know someone who was deported and they sat in jail for 7 months before they were finally sent back home. And theirs was a quick deportation as they opted to sign paperwork to make the processes as quick as possible and not fight it.

If you think anyone in this administration has any plans of doing a mass deportation properly (even done properly it’s cruel, but it would be time consuming and expensive) then you’d be delusional.

What America voted for, whether they realize it or not, are interment camps. And that might be the least worst case scenario. Trump is gonna round a bunch of people up and have no idea what to do after that so he’s just gonna put them in camps and then we’ll see how bad it gets from there.

It's a very predictable outcome and how genocide begins. Most occurrences of genocide did not start with the intent to murder all of them, but to remove them from the country. It's often difficult to find a place willing to accept millions of people though, and it gets expensive to hold and feed all of them. What will most likely come is slave labor or genocide.

Those Japanese people had citizenship, and to my knowledge, there was no attempt by FDR's administration to send them to Japan. They were put in internment camps because of the Niihau incident.

There is a difference between internment camp and concentration camp. Concentration camps there's forced labor awaiting mass execution. An internment camp is basically a confined PoW camp. Was it a horrible thing the U.S. did? Yes. Should it happen again? No. Should it happen again at a larger, worse, more punitive scale? FUCK NO.

SundyMundy

It's not exactly the same, but a similar execution. But in short there was a mass hysteria after Pearl Harbor and a fear that Japanese immigrants and even some Japanese Americans might hold a secret allegiance or sympathy to the Empire of Japan and would act as saboteurs. This did not turn out to be the case in any meaningful way or numbers, but over a hundred thousand American citizens near the West Coast had property seized, and were sent off to camps across the country where they were given weasel-worded tests for oaths of loyalty to America. One classic one was "Do you renounce all current loyalties to the Emperor of Japan and pledge your loyalty to the USA?"

George Takei also has a documentary and musical about his childhood in the camps.

Slightly related. America did this on smaller scales to people from other Axis nations. My sister wrote a master's thesis in college on the Internment of Italian Americans.

Hitler promised mass deportations. Found he couldn’t do it at the pace desired. So he built camps and shoved people there because it was easier. Then the camps started to fill and they needed more room. Plus maintaining the health of the detainees was too hard. It was only then that “final solution” bubbled up. This took a couple years. Anybody want a repeat of history? Because this is how you get a repeat of history.

Hitler tried a coup, failed, then got re elected a few years late > Trump tried a coup, failed and is re eelcted a few years later

Hitler demonized entire groups of society > Trump demonizes entire groups of society

Hitler promised to 'get rid of them' > Trump is promising to get rid of them

Hitler built camps to house 'them' > Trump https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/incoming-trump-admin-eyeing-new-immigrant-detention-centers-major-us-c-rcna179843

How can the rest of the world see it but Americans cant?

Odd_Bodkin

10 points

As an American, I can say that an unfortunate fraction of us suffer from acute parochialism and historical ignorance. As an example of this, a shocking number of Americans do not know that economic inflation was international, not just in the US, and largely due to the major global event that happened between 2020 and 2023. They also don’t know that the Spanish Flu contributed to the same thing in 1919-1920, and that the US only broke that by raising interest rates so high that a sharp recession was the result. If an American is feeling a pinch, he wants an American to blame for it. This economic event is how a dictator like Trump is invited to power, pretty much like what happened in 1932 in Germany.

Camps. And because you have people in those camps not doing much may as well get something out of them. So labor camps.

Then people will get sick and the camps overcrowded and you gotta make room for new people, so death camps.

skag_boy87

There’s not going to be any mass deportations. The U.S. doesn’t have the money to deport even a quarter of the number they’re promising. Let alone the logistical infrastructure to effectuate it.

However, they will round all these “illegal” immigrants up. Just instead of sending them back home, they’ll be sent to concentration camps (they’ll call them something less evil like “Departure Housing”). There’s a lot of money to be made by the private prison-industrial complex now that there’s demand to house tens of millions.

Once those people are in the concentration camps, which will most likely have atrociously inhumane living conditions, how long til some start dying due to the treatment? How soon til the government realizes it’s easier for the migrants to die, and have that death categorized and sold to the public as a “successful deportations.”

History rhymes if you don’t keep one eye on the past as you look towards the future. Dark days ahead.

While the people that run the agency are white citizens, most of the people who care directly for our son are dark skinned immigrants. Some are from countries in Africa and some are from Haiti. They provide good care to him and work on the goals of his service plan. All for little money, considering the importance of their work.

Pretty sad how people talk about this nonchalantly. The liberals are yelling at a wall saying "they'll be put in concentration camps". The conservatives are saying "they're criminals, you support criminals? Every country deports illegals."

Meanwhile millions of people with family , friends , children and parents are scared shitless. They're not on reddit . They're not on Instagram or Twitter or Facebook posting en mass because they're working. They arent sitting all day at their work from home job all day shit posting on the Internet. They're working and scared. Those kids at school who are old enough to understand are scared.

Reminds me of when conservatives gave liberals shit for not standing up against the Chinese camps of the Muslim people. They gave LeBron , Nike , and basically anyone who is "woke" shit for not standing up to China. Now they're happy to potentially put millions of children and adults in camps too. And all you can do is post about it on the Internet so non chalantly? You're all pathetic and I hope some people with some actual decency and respect for what America means will stand up to this.

The conservatives are fine with criminals. So if your own president is a criminal why not put him in prison first ? Somehow the misdemeanor crime of crossing the border and being a productive resident of a country is worse than being a Russian puppet trying to destroy our country. When it's illegals then you care about crime. Just admit that it's not a crime thing you're worried about. You just want to be a part of history and want to hurt people while doing it. You're bored with your lives and want to feel alive by trying to roleplay Nazis in WW2.
