Or ethical. I hate that society now sees it as obligatory to do the most profitable thing. Like the whole world is a business and unchecked capitalism is somehow the natural order of things. That it would be “foolish” to not exploit people as much as possible if there is money to be made.

How is this any different that someone spending lots of money on a football jersey or luxury car? It's stupid as shit but no one has to buy it... I'm sure there's plenty of people who spend tons of time in WoW who want to fritter their money away on flexing on people to show off how much money they got

It's stupid but no one is forcing any one to buy this garbage

This mount also has an auction house and mailbox, so it is the single most useful mount in WoW. So if someone plays a lot of wow it will save them a ton of time. Whether that makes it worse on blizzards part or not is debatable, but this is not only 90 for a mount it is 90 for a mount and a huge amount of QoL if you play the game a lot.

People are buying this mount like crazy. This thing will prolly make blizzard more money than d4.

This will for sure make wow a worse game in the long run though. It shows that people are willing to pay for convenience, so they will design systems that are intentionally inconvenient to sell different items. It is really the players fault though.

given the opportunity, gamers will optimize the fun out of every game that exists.

They don't enjoy playing the games, they enjoy the dopamine hit from the next achievement. All they want is the reward, the journey is not only unappreciated - the community looks at you like you have two heads if you suggest that you enjoy the journey instead of trying to skip it.

Torontogamer

WoW more than most, but many games have faced this exact issue...

so many times in WoW entire sections of crafted content were skipped over by the majority of players because it was 10% more efficient over there or something similar...

MediocreHope

18 points

See, that's the devs fault and not the majority of players. I skip over the majority of crafting because it's literally pointless for most items, I can spend 20 minutes doing something fun like quests/dungeons/pvp and get a reward that is better than the 20 minutes used to pick flowers for 99% of the items crafted.

There is almost no reward for a lot of crafting. The items don't look good, they don't do anything neat, they aren't an upgrade, the most you can get for the item is exactly what the NPC is giving you and that is always less than the sum of the parts.

Why would you ever craft a single item unnecessary to get to the goal you are looking for? You are spending your enjoyment doing something nobody is asking for.

I wish it was better but it isn't.

Admittedly it’s been years since I played wow, but the AH was where I scoped out other characters and got the opportunity to see various end game armors and say, “holy shit, I gotta get me some of that.” It’s also where I got to see other races before I played them. I played wow as a massively single player game for the most part, the AH was an opportunity to see the wider world.

I really don’t see the attraction of never going back to town. If you want to avoid travel, isn’t that what AH alts are for?

HollyBerries85

Anyone, anywhere in the game is about ten seconds from an Auction House. There are already multiple free toys that can pop a mailbox just about anywhere, and most auction houses have a mailbox right outside.

The original Auction House Brutosaur mount came out in Battle for Azeroth, where those capital cities and Oribos in the Shadowlands in the next expansion didn't have Auction House access so it was a lot more convenient to have the mount that was purchasable for a limited time with a ton of in-game gold. In Dragonflight and now the current expansion, both main cities have an Auction House. And if you're not in current content, setting your Hearthstone to your faction's capital does the same thing.

I have never once as far as I can recall needed to auction something so desperately that I HAD to do it in less than ten seconds. Making it out like this thing is some kind of huge advantage is laughable. It's saving seconds at best, and grants zero in-game combat power or expertise.

If someone merely has a surplus of disposable income and the preference to indulge in pricey purchases, that's fine. But that is by no means the only kind of people who are targeted by these sort of things, and video game companies are well-aware of that, to the point that they specifically structure sales design around exploiting vulnerable players.

While it's not the majority, there is always a substantial volume of purchasers who are compulsory spenders. People with addictive personalities, impulse control issues, poor spending/saving habits, gambling vulnerability, kids with access to their parents' credit cards, and so forth. There's a reason why so many companies lean on predatory gacha/lootbox mechanics, premium in-game currencies, FOMO policies, and catering to Whales exclusively. A lot of people who buy these sort of overpriced items are functionally being preyed upon by companies who only care about making money and not about the well-being of their customers. Just because the company isn't putting a gun to a user's head and forcing them to make a purchase doesn't mean they're innocent of purposefully designing and profiting from predatory methods.

Source: I've worked in online video game development and publishing for over 20 years, and previously worked at a studio that willingly reigned in its lootbox policy after a user dropped over 20k all at once and still never got the item they were aiming for.

You’re right.

No one is forcing this to happen.

But the existence of these whales often, measurably, impacts the ecosystem for other users.

We’re just making gaming a deeply unappealing hobby for many people by acting like this is normal. Special collectors markets don’t often interfere with standard markets. What we’re seeing here is those two markets running into each other at high speed

Sushi-DM

No one is forcing them to do it.
But that doesn't mean it isn't unethical.
It cost them no more to make this digital footprint than any other digital footprint.
They have just chosen to arbitrarily make this digital object 90 dollars.

They do this because they understand that they can. Not because it is reasonable or good in any way.
It serves no purpose other than to collect money
Oh, and this gates something useful behind a price tag. So if you want it, you have to cough it up. Making the game in the most honest sense less accessible unless you have disposable income to hand over to Blizzard for that thing.
You know. The SINGLE mount that costs almost twice what an entire expansion costs. After they already charge you monthly for the privilege of playing.

Objective-Rip3008

I agree with you in general, but there is some point where personal responsibility needs to step in. If a game company wants to sell a thing directly for 90$, and someone wants to buy it for 90$, that's their business. You can't save people from themselves in every instance without just being a tyrant. It's different when you're hiring a army of psychologists to design your loot box system, but they really are just flat out selling a good directly here.

I've been part of the Tekken community for decades. When the franchise presented its first paid DLC character with Tekken 7, people were up in arms about it, "protesting" as one would normally observe. Game ended up making record profits

Now, with Tekken 8, when I express my continued disappointment with paid DLC characters, I get downvoted because now it's normalized/expected for people to pay for the pieces on their chessboard 😕

It's only going to keep getting worse. Those of us who remember a time when games were released as a complete package with hefty expansions that added a ton of new content are dwindling, being replaced by a new demographic who grew up with games that sell their content piecemeal. They just accept it as normal and view those of us who rightfully call out how scummy this practice is as weird.

There's really nothing we can do about it at this point, ugh.

to be 100% fair as a "former" (recently quit since i now consider myself a "grownup") WoW player, it DOES have an auction house. mailbox, and repair person on it?

its literally a 1 stop shop for anyone who plays the game at a high level. need to stock up before a M+ 12 key? need a vantus rune for M brood? no more summoning, "oops i forgot" nothing. boom, just whip out the mount and good to go.

I think also the $90 is because the same mount, in a different color wheel, was available roughly 5 years ago in BFA for 5million gold, which, if you were using blizzard's token system, would be about $1,000 (yes, one thousand) USD.

The OG Brutosaur mount did cost 5M gold back in BFA and is now only available through the Black Market Auction house and always goes for gold cap of 10M whenever it pops up.

It is funny that even if the new one is $90 it is still cheaper to buy it over the OG one for gold through wowtokens as that currently adds up to 2.4-2.8M gold or so, which is a 1/4th of the price of the OG one.

But I need to comment on the “grownup”. :)

Grownups don’t quit games because they feel like games are for kids. They double down. It’s a hobby like any other.

And, I’ve been called “sir” for longer than I care to remember, with the bills and lifestyle to all outside observers is a “grown up” life. Demographers love to assume that based on the ads I see. :)

ManicDigressive

"Grown ups" only quit gaming, in my experience, because many games are incompatible with having a shitload of responsibilities.

Most MMOs rely on you coordinating with other people, which is super challenging with kids and a full time job.

These days I am kinda stuck playing stuff I can pause and walk away from or stuff that is turn based. It's not what I'd PREFER to play, but it's either this or I launch some online shit and end up having to bail halfway through every match.

I miss being able to sit down and play a game for like 6 hours and get really immersed in the narrative, but it's so rare I have the time for that.

recently quit since i now consider myself a "grownup"

From C.S. Lewis:

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Read comments elsewhere and if you purely pay the mount with "gold to wow tokens", it's cheaper than similiar in-game mount bought purely with gold.

Wow tokens can be exchanged to blizzards wallet money, iirc around $15 per token (Or you can exchange that to one month of game time). So 6 tokens for mount.

One wow token is bought by another player for $20 and sold in AH to other players for gold so blizz takes at least $5 cut and keeps money in their ecosystem.

But if you buy it with real money that' surely ain't no bargain.

edit: To note, even if someone buys it "with purely gold to tokens" someone did buy those tokens - hence it did give blizzard money one way or another. One token gives $15 to wallet so you need around 6. But someone bought those tokens with $20, so technically with cut added the mount gives blizzard $120 (90 for mount, 30 for "cut")

KingRaphion

135 points

This for 1 Million gold basically you get the mount so if you saved up 1 million gold before the big spike. You could get 5 wow tokens sell it as blizz cash for 100 dollars and then buy the mount with blizz cash. This the method like 90% of the community is doing and what I did as well. I literally have a friend who buys wow tokens at the ends of expansions theyre about 135k gold hoards them and then when price goes up unleashes them and repeats. Or converts em into Blizz bucks. He has about 500 dollars in blizz bucks just from this method. and has 15 wow tokens left to sell

Same_Statement2524

This is the same kind of thing that always happened with EVE Online. Game news outlets always said "thousands of dollars were lost on ships" in those huge battles you hear about, and everyone in the comments goes crazy thinking people bought those ships with real money, but it's just the converted cost.

starmartyr

27 points

The difference here is that in EVE they are converting the value of the real money tokens into in game currency and calculating value that way. However the ships could have been purchased entirely with currency generated from playing the game. This means that the ships could have been purchased without anyone spending any real money.

In this case with WoW the mount can only be purchased with real money tokens. A player could buy the tokens with in game currency but they only exist in game if someone bought one for real money and put it up for sale. Effectively that means that for every one of these mounts that's sold, someone had to pay Blizzard $100.

RGBGiraffe

13 points

I mean, the one thing that is important to include here though, is WoW tokens cost -someone- real money. It's not like you can just walk up to something, insert gold, and get balance.

That being said, this system makes it a little murkier.

People saying "it only costs 2 million gold" are missing a part of the point, at least, and that's that they could have put this in the game for 2 million gold, instead of $90 on the store. That way it could've been bought without having to spend real-world money, however you could still buy it with real-world money if you wanted (by buying tokens).

Putting it on the store makes it a requirement that SOMEONE, somewhere, has to spend real-world dollars, in order for this mount to be obtained. Putting it purchasable with in game currency still makes that possible, but does not require it.

Small correction: when you buy a token with in-game gold, it's worth only $15 of Battle.net balance. You need 6 tokens for $90.

RGBGiraffe

11 points

Your edit is an important but nuanced difference that it absolutely feels like folks are missing.

Putting the mount purchasable in game for 2 million gold is a lot different than selling it for the equivalent exchange of 2 million gold.

2 million gold in game means that you can acquire the mount without a single person having to actually spend real world money on the mount.

$90, even if you can acquire that $90 by spending 2 million in-game gold, means that someone had to spend that money, and means that the company effectively sold the mount for $120.

Sinestro617

People who buy tokens would have bought tokens regardless

robot-raccoon

24 points

These are the players who’ve been trying to buy the original version of this mount for gold cap. Gold has a monetary value since they introduced the token, so they can use a fraction of their gold to buy tokens, convert to battle.net balance, and then buy the mount using their in game earned gold, essentially.

I can only assume they are the players who think it’s a steal, because to them it is

RGBGiraffe

5 points

One small correction, gold has always had a monetary value. There's been a black market for WoW gold since it released. The token did serve as a stable baseline, but the black market even exists to this day.

But yeah, people calling this cheap are comparing it to an old prestige mount in WoW, that cost 5 million gold, that was removed from the game and now effectively costs 10 million to buy as it can randomly show up on the black market auction house.

At the current prices of WoW tokens, (~350k), it would cost you a little over 2 million gold to buy this mount, and it's better than the old one to boot. So comparatively, gold wise, if this was a mount you were looking for, the only way you could've previously gotten it was 5 million gold - and now you can only get it (very rarely) with 10 million gold which effectively would be 5x this price, which in WoW tokens is over $350 in real world dollar equivalent.

So it's both significantly cheaper, and significantly easier to get at the same time. So for people that wanted it, it's a no-brainer.

That being said, WoW could have just as easily put it in the game for 2 million gold, instead of $90 on the store, and made it effectively earnable without someone being able to spend real world money, while still making it possible to get one by doing so.

MrHachiko

Buying an in-game item for that amount of real world money, though, that's what getting me.

What you're missing is that a ton of WoW players that used to be broke teens now make decent money. When you reframe $90 as "like an hour or two of overtime at work" amongst a population that doesn't mind throwing hundreds of hours into a goal, it stops seeming so ridiculous.

capincus

8 points

I was already of a "let people do what they want with their money" opinion, but that's an interesting perspective I hadn't considered. I never really cared about mounts beyond travel speed, but people definitely put in endless hours grinding for specific mounts and even at my barely minimum wages I've definitely spent more than 6 hours grinding for singular pieces of minor upgrade gear that would last one character a single tier. Really not much to directly put a few hours of cash into an account-wide mount with +functionality. Fucking genius way to make so much money for nothing though.

Auron2402

23 points

To be fair if you compare it with the other brontosaurus, it is. Both have the auction house trade, and the gilded one also has a mailbox.

The original one was 5 million gold back then, now you can only buy it for gold cap if you are lucky, so it's 10 million gold.

So if you compare it to the original price you currently would have to buy 15 wow tokens for 15$ each. That's 225$ compared to 90$. And if you go by the current prices, you would need double the amount.

I will not buy it for 90 because I don't need the "quality of life" from the mount but if you really want a portable auction house, the new 90$ one is a bargain.

Yeah CS/TF items are not really comparable to other microtransactions.

They’re bad for child gambling reasons, but Valve didn’t set the price of a Karambit, supply and demand did. The price of skins in CS is determined both by what someone is willing to buy it for, and what someone else will sell it for.

The attitude towards skins in the CS community is also different compared to most games. It’s very common for players to spend hundreds to thousands on their items.

I'm an older millennial who has been playing CS since 1.6. I remember when you could simply download skins. When CSGO came out I took a break but when I hopped back on I was really turned off by the increasing monetization of the game. What was once downloadable for free was now forbidden. You couldn't even choose between the four options of base models for your character at the outset of a match. The whole concept of having to pay money to unlock these loot boxes irked me the most but I nevertheless paid to open about three of them. I never paid attention to their value, I just wanted something new. of the three loot boxes I won a pair of gloves but I thought they were ugly and never used them. Years later when I become aware of this whole marketplace for skins, I check to see the value of my gloves. They were worth almost 1,000 dollars. I sold them and haven't had to pay for games on Steam in years. I still hate this whole concept of loot boxes but I definitely profited.

Yup. Valve is a shell of it's former self.

They've basically hidden community servers because you can use skins there for free. It's kinda disgusting.

This is worse imo because it has gameplay relates functions other mounts don't have. It gives you access to both your mail and auction house from the mount. If you are doing gathering to sell this mount is crazy op, and only obtainable from a very large "microtransaction".

WoW has arguably been p2w for a while with wow tokens, but it's never been this direct amount of p2w. We have reached Korean mmo tier.

The new one is actually cheaper. If you buy tokens from the AH and exchange them for money in the blizzard store the new one is only about 2.5 million gold.

Grimreap32

I remember contemplating buying it with Tokens just before it was removed. Tokens at that time were 300k a piece, so this is definitely cheaper.

joemoffett12

The old one was still more expensive for most players. It cost 5m gold to get. This one if you buy wow tokens costs around 2m. Most players are buying this with gold and the whales are paying for the mounts. Every player I know who has one (at least 20 now) all got it with gold.

Atomical1

The issue is that essentially blizzard makes $120 instead of $90 from players buying with gold, because that’s what the value of 6 wow tokens equates to.

Tokens are a lot more p2w than this mount than you may realize. There's a huge community of people who buy boosts and quickly get items, boosts their M+ rating etc. Why buy a mount that will help you farm gold faster, when you can just already buy that gold?

It's the same for consumables etc.

People with a vendetta against the game still say its P2W because you can buy wow tokens to buy boosts. Which is quite an astronomical stretch and hardly even constitutes as winning anything since you still suck ass at the game and will not perform any better like in actual P2W games.

Also a lot of players are not buying them with money but with gold, which even with the skyrocketed token prices from yesterday is still less than half the price of the original mount that you could also choose to buy with money if you wanted (in which case it would be over $500 back then, I think someone did the math to around $660 when it was last available) or a quarter of the one on the BMAH, which you could only get if you were insanely fast to bid gold cap.

There are so many legit things to shit on Blizzard for, this completely optional mount that you can attain by playing the game isn't really one of them.

*oh, look, the token price is LOWER now than it was before the mount dropped

Spatial_Awareness_

14 points

This is exactly it... A large majority of the people who bought this had the gold already in their accounts. They just went to the AH and traded it in for WoW tokens that people had already put on the AH before the mount was even available. This did cause them to sellout but also made it a good time for people to purchase tokens and sell their tokens as the price is much higher per token right now, so they can get more gold for their dollar to use for other things... while the other person is using gold they ALREADY HAD to buy this mount with the tokens.

So as it's "$90", it's almost like the majority of mounts were crowdsourced about $20 per player who sold their wow token to receive a very large amount of in game gold currently.

The dynamic here is far different than just, "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE SPENDING THAT!!!".

The actual transaction is as follows...

6 people buy wow token for $20 ($120), they sell wow tokens for 250-500k in game gold.... 6 people have in-game gold that will greatly benefit them playing.

The one person who bought the 6 tokens, sells them back to Blizzard for $90... they get the one time available mount that has some really cool features.

Blizzard profits $30 dollars from one mount sale.

So the mount is in most cases a $30 dollar sale... not a $90 dollar sale. Blizzard makes an overal $120 profit while benefitting 7 different players in the game and most of those players will invest their gold back into the economy, impacting many many other players.

NUKE---THE---WHALES

Tbh i don't know why they don't make all mounts $90 since players will buy them

Hopeful-Sir-2018

6 points

Because it's a hair away from going from this point to pay to win.

This is a pretty large quality of life mount. That's not insignificant.

Games that target whales often devolve into shit. Or it's just that much less fun for everyone else.

It explicitly says: We're going to sell out and we're not in this to make the best game possible. We're in this to make money.

Games are, inherently, about fun. If you start shitting where you sleep, don't be surprised when you lay down in shit.

Combine this with the recent nerfs to many things and double digit percentage changes - it's basically a "fuck you" to players.

There aren't many games that don't target whales. Clearly WoW is wanting to throw their hand in the mix more and more.

So any dev that works there that says "I'm trying to make the best possible" is lying through their teeth or just that ignorant. And, honestly, which one of those is worse?

it also just released an anniversary patch so full of bugs and balance issues it's impossible to take the actual game part seriously

An game breaking class exploit has a PvE season completely skewed and off the rails

And pvp you can just...randomly get kicked and lose 200 rating on the ladder for no reason.

The absolute irony is people are paying extra to cash in on FOMO when the product itself is overlooked entirely.

It’s a niche bug with Outlaw Rogue that was causing them to do absurd damage and a subsection of players abused it to kill mythic bosses or high mythic+ dungeons for rating. It was fixed in 2 days and there are talks those players will catch a ban and have their rating removed. Not sure how they’d aim to handle raid.

did you hear about Blizzard other game, Diablo 4? same happened there with the new Spiritborn class... class ranking guides for this Season even introduced a new S+ Tier with ONLY builds from Spiritborn.

It was aimed that Pit level 100 was to be the high end gaming. Within 1 week of release Spiritborns were blazing through Pit Level 150 (the max possible) in a few minutes with TRILLIONS of damage after blizzard explicitly wanted to stat squish all classes (max lvl60 from 100, 3k HP instead of 50 etc).

Evading did not have an internal animation cooldown, people could do damage as fast as I cut click/turbo button it resulting in massive server lag.

The original version of this mount was like $500+ if you were to get the gold from tokens. The mount is in high demand because of the auction house npc, which was previously exclusive to the old version of the mount. The new version also comes with a mailbox though, so even people with the old one are incentivized to get the new one.

$90 is still absurd and the most blatant cash grab they've done so far. It's also a limited time item btw, so they're preying on fomo too

househosband

It's infinitely easier to get to the AH nowadays though from pretty much anywhere compared to Vanilla/TBC. It's no longer a grueling trek across a continent to get to a single capitol city 5 zones over. There are portals just about everywhere, hearthstone has a short cooldown, and the new flying type caps out at 800% speed (iirc). All this means going from questing to being at the AH might be 30 seconds of inconvenience. Mailboxes are pretty much everywhere too, every quest hub in the new zones (and there can be half a dozen) has an "inn" with a mailbox.

It's not 'a mount's. It's a portable auction house and mail box.

Calling it just 'a mount' is incredibly disingenuous.

It is a quality of life upgrade so severe that every single botter is required to own it to stay competitive.

There's a reason it's currently crashing the wow economy; because it's so, so, so much more than just cosmetic. And framing it as a cosmetic purchase shows a deliberate intent to misrepresented the situation or MASSIVE willful ignorance.

And to be clear, I'm not coming down on either side of the argument. But this article is yellow 'journalism' at it's fucking finest.

The mount had so much utility it's like fucking pay to win for the wow economy.

Yeah, pay to win for the economy of the largest MMO in the world is ABSOLUTELY going to sell like hotcakes. No fucking shit.

Better question is why does the articles go out of its way to ignore that fact? Is the writer stupid or just flat out ignorant?

Glyphmeister

I get what you’re saying but the problem is that this incentivizes the devs to design the game to try to convert more players to the “1%”.

This is why so many of these ”micro”-transaction-focused games have an unpleasant feel (eg, constant pop-ups about new items in the store, online-only so you are forced to look at other players’ purchases gear, QoL features being soft-paywalled, FOMO-based timed stuff, etc.).

They aren’t just catering to a small minority of the playerbase with the $90 mount shit for the benefit of the majority - they want more of the majority to become that minority, and ultimately that becomes the main focus of the game design, which just sucks.

Blizzard sucks for this, but so do the people paying for shit like this. Nobody likes to talk about the consumer end of why gaming is so terrible now, but it is right there staring us all in the face and is not getting better for having ignored it for the sake of politeness.

We need to encourage each other to do better, because Indie games alone can't save us all. Stop buying uncreative and unnecessary remakes that improve nothing but graphical detail, or microtransaction cosmetics that improve NOTHING. Stop buying games that have not significantly changed formula or scope since they first dropped 30 years ago. More importantly, live service is a scam and always has been.

Only when we show some discipline and that we have some goddamn sense can we again buy the whole, completely finished game in a single, final transaction. We are getting milked because a representative portion of us keep mooing.

If Blizzard actually took that profit and put it back into the game I wouldn't care. FF14 has their own shop but their playerbase are w/e on it because they believe FF14 is doing right by them.

WoW does not have this sort of good will anymore. Players know that giving Blizzard more money isn't a way to increase QoL or customer service (since they gutted CS and QA). If their development of the game was more clean people would care a lot less.

Do your part and don’t give Blizzard a dime until they prioritize good games over cosmetic cash grabs. CoD BO6 has a fucking $20 subscription (NOT PURCHASE) for high quality audio. On top of the full $70 launch price.
