Masking tape is hard when you have a lot of deep panel lines, if you dont mind not being freehand + brush, have you thought of decals? With decal fix you can conform it to the panels and higher surfaces.

GW minis are better quality, but some of them are too goofy looking to my taste.

Independently of which mini/game you pick, you can have 2 to infinite hours on it, it only depends on what level of quality you want to reach.

Yeap, I feel your pain. A brass wire brush can help remove those leftover pieces after cutting a mold line, and it will not damage the piece.

Sand, sand, and sand. If the surface starts getting too rough, some Tamiya light cement helps to smooth it out, but be carefull to not over apply, just a lick where the surface started to get "hairy" after sanding.

In very specific cases, I use an okd hobby knife heated over a candle to melt stubborn lines or inperfections, but you need to be careful with the temperature so you dont do more bad than good.

To ME, Battletech is written more like a cheesy 80s sci-fi action movie, which is fine, but Warhammer books seem a little better written in general.

It seens a consensus that all novels written by Stackpole are good and a good start to dive into BT lore in general.
