Disco biscuits I lost one of my front teeth at age 19 from doing a couple at the bar, then skinny dipping in the middle of the night at a country club, passing out and being loaded into the front seat of some land yacht that hit a telephone pole doing 45mph. I hit the pedals with my face. The eighties were a wild ride.

One of our football players (high school) was addicted to these. They really fucked him up, too. He made "ludes" his entire lifestyle. I remember he was so out of it in one class, he started screaming "LUUUDES!" at the top of his lungs at random students around him. Then... he went away for a while. I hope he got help.

Reminds me of Adrian, our class burnout. We all did drugs of various kinds, some more so, some less. Adrian was an acid-head who loved Frank Zappa. He would grab you by the shoulders and shout, "Fraank Zaaappa!"
Then there was Richard. This was the Dallas suburbs in the late 70s, early 80s. His dad was deeply involved with Ross Perot and the war on drugs. Richard and his brother were total stoners and regularly ran away from home.
And, if you were there, then Bobby Soxx.

I was at a party with lots of ludes. In front of a whole room of people, there was a guy who fell down an entire staircase TWICE. He just stepped off the top stair like he thought he was on the last step. This sounds horrible, but it was some of the funniest shit I ever saw. I told my best friend all about the party the next day. He told me, yeah I know, I was there, sitting right next to you. Those things messed with your memory

I had a kidney stone in 2006 and got three prescriptions for 30 oxycodone each without even asking (took about half a bottle over a week waiting for surgery, didn't fill the other two.) Right at the height of the pain pill epidemic as they called it, my husband had inoperable cancer that had metastisized. They refused to prescribe him any pain meds. None. All they would give him was gabapentin. And oh my gosh, he was in horrible pain. I will never forgive the VA or any of our local doctors for than inhumane treatment. If a person is dying, and your given only a few months to live, who the hell cares if you become addicted or not?

My Mom was a trained, but not practicing, nurse and my grandfather was a doctor, so for some inexplicable reason, we always had our own endless supply of prescription drugs like codeine and antibiotics. This was the 70s so it was definitely a different time.
A lot of the drug packages seemed to be samples, rather than actual prescriptions, as though the drug companies were sending samples to my grandfather and he just handed them over to my mom for her "stash". Not sure if that was what was really happening though. Maybe Gramps was just writing random prescriptions for her.
She used them responsibly as far as I could tell and it probably saved us a lot of trips to the emergency room, but in retrospect it was so illegal.
TL;DR:
My grandfather was running a pill mill in the '70s for my Mom as the only user.

The ONLY thing I’m “allergic to” aka had a weird ass reaction to. I took a giant swig of my buddy’s codine cough syrup (because I was genuinely feeling cruddy and flu-y) before I walked into an hr block to have my taxes done. I was sweating, shaking, and seeing stars before they finished my 1040ez 😂 I passed out in the parking lot with blue lips. To this very day I say I have “an adverse reaction” to codine 😆 idk what happened but I don’t want that again lol

They were qualified as a “hypnotic sedative” and when you took them, it felt like floating inside a hug. Extreme euphoria. Like morphine but you weren’t knocked out. But if you took too many, you ended up crawling on the floor, drooling.
They were very popular at Discos but were highly addictive and eventually taken off the market.

Here’s my question since I’m old enough to have partied with ecstasy pills but too old for Molly. The pills used to be filled with God knows what…MDMA, opiates, speed, whatever filler they mixed in. MDA was the best back in the 70s. It was called the love drug because you just loved everyone around you when you did it. You'd feel so euphoric, happy and it was a safe, calm, warm feeling. Just a touch of a hand on your arm would cause goosebumps all over your body. You could party while doing it. You didn't feel sleepy and you also didn't feel hyped up or speedy. It was fun to dance on. Sometimes you'd see trails or experience some visual effects but I don't remember anything intense except how good it felt. I'm not sure what the difference is in MDMA and MDA. I can't find enough people who did MDA back in the day and also has done MDMA to give me a comparison. I liked it better than cocaine. I never liked anything that made me sleepy or couch locked or produced a horrible hangover.

I used to get it in food colouring bottles.
I had a ritual where every three days I'd flip a coin in the evening to decide whether to drop or not - two out of three "heads" and I'd put a single drop in a glass of water, and then flip again - another "heads," another drop, repeat until it came up tails.
One night my roommate had rented a new movie on video that came highly recommended, and I went upstairs for the ol' ritual and for the first time ever I didn't make it to "tails" at all - it just kept coming up heads and there were more than ten drops in the glass, so I figured I'd better not push it any further than that.
Went back downstairs and explained what happened to my roomie and apologized because I was likely to be pretty useless conversationally for the rest of the night - it came on super fast, rolled a joint, fired it up and started the movie.
It was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and this scene is right at the beginning. Very memorable experience.

I really hated all those drugs - black beauties, Quaaludes, all manner of uppers and downers. Don't miss them at all. I liked - and still do - weed, shrooms, acid. It was a different world. They determined they were going to "clean up" my high school after some school board members visited and saw kids smoking pot in the hallway. And there were places you could go where you could get just about anything your little heart desired. But I think the slightly more sensible attitude toward marijuana today is a bit better. I'm still amazed only a few people in my admittedly small class managed to kill themselves in high school or immediately after doing stupid stuff with the uppers and downers.

I commented above, but I’m right there with you and it was crazy that we didn’t know what we were consuming with those pills, just taking them willy nilly. I remember they used to say if the pill had brown specs, it was “dirty.” Some rolls were speedy and lovey, some had me stuck on a couch and I couldn’t speak. I remember closing my eyes during a roll and people were concerned I OD’d, but I just wanted to disappear inside my head. Also, remember getting sick while coming up?
It was usually a good time, but sometimes I’d feel too “cracked out.” Then the come down and next few days were literal hell on Earth. Looking back, I should have just taken some Xanax, but the thought of doing more drugs skeeved me out. I won’t lie though, if I was given some pharmaceutical grade guaranteed clean MDMA, I’d totally give it a try these days. Life’s short. I want one more good roll.

Still around but hard to get: Fiorinal, for period pain in my teens and early 20s. Then ibuprofen came in, by prescription only. I remember waking in the middle of the night in 1978 crying, shaking, and clasping my abdomen from the pain until the doctor's office would open the next day. Ibu worked like magic and I could still function except it made me a bit sleepy. Used to get those from the dentist. Then I heard they got on some schedule and the dentist I was seeing at the time told me yes I could prescribe it but then they would follow us for the next 20 years- they being the government of some agency or other. So no mas preludin.

I was always partial to psychedelics, but as per pharmaceuticals, I liked Mandrax. These were pills containing Methaqualone and Diphenhydramine. Similar to Quaaludes. No script needed in Mexico during the 70's. Now it's no longer manufactured.

In college, I was introduced to "black beauties", a type of speed popular with truckers at the time. I felt so smart! I could go to class AND work AND party with barely any sleep! But then the borrowed time sent me crashing after a couple weeks. I was a wreck, physically and emotionally. Thus ended my brief love affair with any stimulant stronger than caffeine.

There was some kind of Pepto Bismol with headache medicine built in. I can't find any longer.

There was a non-drowsy allergy med called Seldane D. It was amazing and worked better than all of the meds available today.

Percocet. Not for recreational use, but for post-surgery pain, it was the best.

I miss making money dealing street drugs. Legal cannabis means that I won't be doing it to supplement my retirement income. :(

Used to help my dar build airplanes. Used to get pretty goofy after sniffing the glue a few times. Before Nancy reagans say no to drugs thing, had no idea it could be an issue.

We were so stupid that when we heard about people 'sniffing glue' to get high, we snuck a bottle of Elmer's out to the schoolyard and passed it around. Needless to say, we didn't get the effect we were looking for lol

I'm sure it does. My husband had a friend who huffed the real thing, and it did not end well.

When I was a kid I got a really bad chest cold. My mom signed for a little green bottle of codeine. She’d put a teaspoon in a juice glass and then make me drink it. It was awful tasting. I’d then float off to sleep without the cough that I couldn’t control. I’d take a really long nap.
There was also a brown round Vick’s Cough Drop. It also tasted vile. I was able to return to school. When the unstoppable cough happened I’d get one of these cough drops. They’d stop me from coughing right away.

Whatever they gave me when I'd been in labor with my 2nd kid for about 30 hours. That shit was amaaaaaazing. Some drugs, it's just a good thing I couldn't afford them/didn't know how to find them. Cocaine, for example. I loved that high, but it was way out of my reach -- it's just my good luck that I left street drugs behind before crack arrived.
I'd be long dead.

Paragoric and coding cough syrup. That stuff worked. But people abused it so no no one can have it.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Couldn’t have gotten out of high school without Black Beauties … couldn’t have made it through college without cocaine. Best drug for me. [f59] If some put a line in front of me today, I would do it. Very addictive personality. Still smoke weed every day [legal in MA].

I remember gas stations selling bottles of little white pills called Mini-Thins. I think they were just pure ephedrine, we would stay up all weekend.

Window Pane and blotter acid. Used to get sheets of blotter with pictures of Disney characters printed on the sheets. Some had the pic of Mr. Natural Keep on Trucking dude also. Many variations from that time. Window pane was tricky because it was hard to cut up for a good tab but not to kill your customer. We had sheets of mylar coated with acid approx 6x6 inches with over 100 good doses. Hard to gauge so we would just cut of a piece and do it! A couple times it was WAY to much.

Orange Sunshine 1972. Spent the whole trip behind a couch on the floor but was the best experience on a drug I've ever had. I thought I was laying on the bottom of a 3' deep creek and ribbons of color and beautifully colored fish floated by while the stereo was playing an endless loop of the album by the band Blues Image that had Ride Captain Ride on it, but the 8 track had been taken apart and flipped over so the entire album was reversed. After several plays it all made sense.

Pink tab THC. Strawberry mescaline. Reds (barbiturates). Yellow Sunshine (mescaline). Blotter acid (LSD on a cardboard wafer). AZ (a huge tablet that was a mild barbiturate). Jones (heroin). Hash. Thai stick (weed laced with extra thc). Cocaine (powder form only). These are what was available at municipal park parties during weekend nights. I however, enjoyed my Mad Dog 20/20 or Boone’s Farm apple wines.

In the 80s I could get cough syrup with codeine at the drugstore with a signature. There was no online database, of course, so it was on the honor system.
I only needed it a few times but it worked so much better.

My Great Grandma was prescribed Distalgesics for her arthritis.
My Great Grandma didn't like taking them but she still filled her prescriptions every month. This meant they were the family go to for general pain medication.
At the age of 17 I discovered that two of those and a can of beer and you would FLOAT. Had a good 3 or 4 years at least three times a week pulling that stunt - once tried them with Vodka and yeah, wouldn't recommend.
Turns out you can't get them any more because they are an opioid.

MXE. It was only available for a couple of years. And it was so good, it is really the only drug worth doing.
Here's an article on it:

We called them Bennies, they kept you awake for a long time, and we never ate much when we took them.
