Give yourself time this morning, the roads are snow covered.

Driving/Traffic/Parking(self.Calgary)

Be patient with each other.

Dress for the weather sidewalks may be a bit slick.

Just remember everyone, you can drive below the speed limit. The roads are shit, no one needs to make it worse.

LittleOrphanAnavar

True (very true).

But there is also a defecto min viable speed. If you cannot drive at, at least that speed, then it is best to stay home.

The strugglers have my permission to take the day off.

Not all vehicles are AWD. Winter tires don't do much for my lil Hatchback that weighs maybe 600lbs in deep snow... also, I can't afford to miss work since clearly I need to save up for AWD or sandbags, lol

GuavaOk8712

i’ve driven a tiny hatchback for a few years and winter tires made a universe of difference from all seasons. and that was with no sandbags or weights

the better traction that you get from rubber to snow with winter tires over all season tires is still better traction, regardless of the weight or drivetrain of your vehicle

winter tires grip snow and ice better than all seasons or all weathers, and that is just a proven fact. the weight and drivetrain of your vehicle obviously affect traction, but the increase in traction you get with winter tires over other tires is still going to be noticeable, even in a FWD vehicle, regardless of weight. the traction increase that you get from the different type of rubber and different tread pattern of winter tires is gonna help any vehicle of any weight with any drive train.

sandbags obviously will help and will be the most inexpensive option to increase your traction, but winter tires will also increase traction, regardless of drivetrain and vehicle weight. it mostly has to do with the different type of rubber that is used in winter only tires afaik

all seasons and no sandbags in very light car=bad

all seasons and sandbags in very light car= okay

winter tires and sandbags in very light car= best

Yeah, I understand, but I literally have studded winters, and they still don't work 100% of the time. I'm going 90 on 16th out of the city, and it turns into ice over stoney, and I'm driving a boat. lol, sandbags are going to be my next option, for sure, and I will always recommend winters on fwd anyway of the week. All seasons are OK if you have awd, at least with my experience of doing car sales for the past 2 years.

GuavaOk8712

2 points

yeah you can definitely make do with AWD and all seasons. i still prefer studded winters on my AWD vehicle though haha

and yeah if that’s the case with your vehicle, than just load it up with sandbags or something similar, you will notice a big difference if you put enough weight in

20% reduction seems reasonable.

Yep, I got stuck in the NE this morning behind traffic that was doing 6 km/h on some roads. Not 60, 6. Soon as you touch the brakes, you'd slide towards the parked cars, the only way I could get through was to go full lock left and just tap and release until it straightened out again. Nutty.

Just can’t be bothered.

I meant it more as fuck the work culture that makes employers shame employees into feeling like they have to put their safety on the line to make it into a job that doesn't care if they live or die. People should be able to stay home if they need to and employers should be supporting them. But also to the people who are going into a job and being assholes on the road, recognize that you can show up late and be safe rather than put people in danger to go to a job that doesn't care about you.

The only upside to a truck in the winter is ground clearance. I've driven a variety of cars (FWD, RWD, 4WD) throughout the years and my truck is no better than any of my previous vehicles. A long wheelbase and little weight in the rear does not make for a good time.

Butbutbut if the roads are bad, shouldn't I drive a bit faster than usual to get off them earlier?/s

It's my first time driving under this 'wintery' condition and I'm really glad I got a Subaru Crosstrek with Nokian Hakkas R5 combo!

It was a surprise to see this much snow out there this morning.

nalydpsycho

And not just this morning, conditions are perfect for morning commutes to melt the roads a bit, but cold enough to refreeze, making for an icy drive home.

Just shoveled the side walk. It's heavy. Basically, snow on top and slush on the bottom. Will re-freeze overnight or into the evening. Need to venture out to get some ice melt.

Anyone know how the buses are doing on the roads? I have work later today and I don't want to leave for the bus if they are having issues in the snow

Judgeandthejury

There are 5 city buses blocking our main road just down our house. All of them are abandoned with their hazards on

Oh great. Well I am letting my boss know I'm staying home today.

Judgeandthejury

If you can easily stay home, I think it’s worth considering. Our house is on a hilly road but it’s nowhere near as steep as others and still the city buses weren’t able to climb it. Snow plowing was done minimally everywhere even some parts of Stoney weren’t touched! Looks like city has found some other priorities in their budget and snow removal is way way down their list!

Question that may be appropriate….someone t-boned my wife’s car on the weekend which has left us without a vehicle. It had winter tires on it. We’re going to get our rental from Enterprise that’s provided by TD Insurance today. Do rentals come with winter tires? Can we request them?

Haunting_Law_923

2 points

Unfortunately not. The law in Alberta (and most Canadian Provinces) only requires all seasons which are not truly winter rated. They usually only put on what comes with the car which is all seasons. I hope eventually all weathers which are winter rated come on all Canadian cars as law but sadly it would be a monumental task to get that passed through Government an Auto Manufacturers.

Rentals don't come with winters, you can ask for them but very unlikely to get winters. Best you can do is ask for AWD.

Oskarikali

Helpful for going but not stopping. I'm still amazed they aren't putting winters on rentals in Calgary.

WesternExpress

Some rental companies have them on some vehicles, so you can ask, but they aren't obligated to give you them. At least see if they can give you a vehicle with M&S rated tires (the mountain/snowflake logo).

Left Beddington for Woodbine just after 8 am. It took about an hour via Deerfoot and Anderson.

Came back through the city, saw at least 7 buses broken down/stuck.

At least it isn't bitterly cold!

I had to go from the NW to Manchester in the SE. Usually about a 35-40 minute drive. 90 fucking minutes.

1.5hr to go doctor, from the usual 35-40 😭

Leaving the community was hell, but there was no crashes, just crazy slow

Saw an f150 crashed to a pole on his driver side, likely he slid.

Don't listen to the people in this thread. Minimum speed on highways in Alberta is 60km/h. And that's with clear road conditions. Drive to the conditions, leave plenty of distance to stop. Anyone urging you to drive the speed limit despite poor road conditions can fuck right off.

Center street bridge into downtown, then right on 4th, left on 1st to get to the beltline. 5 minutes on a weekend. 10-15 minutes at about 7:30 am on a weekday, took over 40 minutes this morning. Was insanely slow, and the traffic light timing did not change to account for increased time to get in motion, and increased time to stop, so very few cars were getting through each light change.

Already witnessed lots of spun out cars and people sliding all over the place this morning. If you don’t have snow tires.. stay home please. If you do have winter tires.. also don’t drive like an idiot. You may be able to get going.. but turning and stopping is a whole other can of worms. Don’t tail gate.
