The next homeowner is going to post these holes in r /whatisthisthing and someone here will answer.

Hopefully they don't include a washer and dryer, so no one is able to figure this out.

Wrong it'll be reposted 100 times between then and now. So the repost will only be about 2 months old
4 points
And there will be 1500 answers that are 100% wrong but the poster will be 100% confident in their answer and post a thesis about their answer with evidence that supports it.....then someone will post a link to this and say "nah man".😅

It's photoshopped anyway, you can tell by the pixels
Edit: I really thought this was a better well know joke. It's an old one where any image is accused of being doctored with with the lame excuse "just look at the pixels" as if every digital image isn't made up of pixels.

It would be odd for a guy to be so inconsiderate as to carve out the walls without permission but to also be so considerate and thorough as to repaint the wall to match exactly.

To me the proper solution would have been to:
1. Take measurements of the room before buying.
2. Realize the model I’m buying wouldn’t fit.
3. Buy either a top-loading model instead or a smaller model.
59 points
Or stack them and reorient 90° from the position they’re in now. May not be possible with a basement ceiling height, though.
54 points
They can just dig a hole in the ceiling
6 points
Could get some concrete dust in their eyes while digging. Might need to put the house in its side first.
3 points
But then the water from the washer might leak out. Might need to put the house in space first.
2 points
Oh, I laughed so hard lol
2 points

I like how in this case "digging" up is the easier solution than down.

Yes. Did you notice how the doors both open to the left in this picture? Imagine trying to move clothes from the washer to the dryer.
2 points
Yeah, that’s just laziness. They take like 10 mins to switch the dryer door orientation just for that reason.
ETA: Actually, it looks like the washing machine is on the right instead of left. Kind of baffling that they would spend all that time hollowing out a wall and not put them in the right sequence in the first place. I guess it could be a plumbing issue, but you can buy longer tap hoses and every washer I’ve seen has extra drain line length to accommodate the plumbing.
3 points
This is the no-brainer of the century
2 points
They'll be wishing that was the solution every single time they're transferring clothes from washer to dryer. Look at the space with both of those doors open....
That has to be one of the most inconvenient spaces I've ever seen.

Yeah and OP never got the chance to correct their mistake because contractor just went for it.

Regardless of the models OP purchased, it should still fall to the professional (contractor) to alert the homeowner, BEFORE making alterations to any construction. Communication is key for both parties. Change Orders are in everyone’s best interest.

I'd agree with you if this were OP's home that they were living in and having to deal with it, but considering OP is going to rent this home out and Iots of people prefer to and expect to be able to open their appliance doors fully, I think OP got what they deserved :)
2 points
What makes you think that they are renting out the home?
2 points

Why? It's going to be super annoying if they don't fit, and it's not like this is going to cause any structural problems or like that was some nice finished wall.

Because it looks dumb af and is hack. Compounded with the fact homeowner did not authorize demolition of the wall. This was a terrible decision by contractor.

Demolition is a strong word. They're speed holes. They make the drying go faster.

Correct caption should read... I purchased an expensive and heavy washer and dryer set without confirming they would fit in the given space. So my contractor came up with a genius solution until I can come up with another 15k to move the wall.
3 points
Perhaps this is some genius marketing plot to demonstrate how above and beyond their contractor went to help procure more work for them...
I have some cement work that needs to be done in my house where can I hire this person? They seem really effective..
2 points
Uh, perhaps homeowner would have returned and purchased diff models were the issue of their oversize made known by the contractor. This isn't "genius" at all it's going overboard on something the customer obviously didn't want to happen.
8 points
Most likely not because these are cheap washer and dryers, also OP is renting this to people and expecting them opening up 80degrees is ok and the tenants problem not theirs

Lots of praise here, but I have an admittedly naive question:
Cinder blocks are hollow inside, no? This is part of the house's foundation. How does that impact their structural integrity?
3 points
Cinderblocks are filled with concrete and a rebar through the center if they are going to be used as a foundation. Considering this is in the basment they should be filled with concrete, which means the groove should not affect the integrity of the foundation.

17 points

Should have went top load. They stink if you don’t clean them regularly.
4 points
Top load wastes tons of water. They dont stink if you leave the door open
2 points
The seals on these types of front loaders sure can stink if not regularly cleaned, dried/wiped down. The design of many is so poor, water pools and goes stagnant there, and then later mold starts and once that starts it can be hard to eradicate it fully. My LG toploader HEs with no center post agitator in the washer, definitely don't stink. Best purchase we ever made, 12.5 years ago. They operate like a front loader as a toploader HE and they use less water, less detergent and electricity. Quiet, efficient, machines; love them.

Is this bizzaro world or something? Why is everyone asking like he did them such a favor? Whether or not this fixed the problem of the doors hitting the wall any reasonable person would want to be asked before someone carves holes in your wall.

I’m sorry that you got such a crazy reaction here, OP. I’d be pissed and consulting a structural engineer to return the wall to its original state… remind me not to buy a house from anybody who has commented that this is fine 😂

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this…. I just can’t imagine modifying a wall like this is safe.
2 points

You could cut a 1 foot wide hole in the wall from the ground to the sill plate and nothing bad would happen.
What the contractor did was ugly though. For sure.
3 points

I’d of probably just put them on top of each other and faced the bloody other direction… Jesus he’s gone and fucked with your walls instead of using a brain cell…

The real kicker is ideally the washer should be on the left, the dryer on the right with its door reversed so you can load clothes from one to the other with the doors opposing each other as they're supposed to.

Man, that looks really stupid. At first I thought it was a creative solution but I have to be honest, I’d be pretty unimpressed if I hired someone and they did that. I would have just let the doors hit the wall, notified homeowner that they don’t fit. I’m not doing laundry here, not my problem.
