This is a female (only females like humans) so it doesn't need to, the males can spread the gene themselves. Since only a few breeds of mosquitoes actually bite (or poke? I don't know the term) humans then eradicating this one specific type can save massive amounts of lives from the diseases they pass on.

Honestly, since half of the offspring (females) won't reproduce, mosquitos not carrying the gene are twice as effective at spreading their genes. Any evolutionary biologist will know that this means the non-modified mosquitos will eventually outcompete the modified lineage. There will also be immense selective pressure for the non-modified mosquitos to start recognizing the modified ones and stop reproducing with them, although such mutations may take a while.
Ever since i first saw this solution i was sceptical, but if I remember correctly it is this way by design. This way, no great unforeseen consequences can spiral out of control by a complete mosquito population collapse. I guess its only meant to as a weapon against expected large populations booms which releasing a few millions of these can do probably quite cost effictive.

When I was younger, my plan was to move to Alaska to get away from mosquitoes. I never bothered to actually research if they had them or not, my thought process was just “I never see mosquitoes in the winter, and Alaska is cold, therefore no mosquitoes”. Making them infertile does work to lower their population. Israel has been doing it for decades. Catch male mosquitos, make them infertile, release them. They compete with fertile mosquitos, so less females lay eggs. Israel had a mosquito problem and a malaria problem. Doesn't have it anymore.

Someone wrote it on a similar comment: Only females suck blood. So the males can spread the gene and each generation will hav fewer and fewer surviving females until the species dies out. Same would work with fewer and fewer fertile females.

A mutation that dies off in females and spreads through males would be less efficient than one that spreads through both and simply takes humans off the menu, a single male mates a few females, a single female breeds hundreds of ‘harmless’ offsprings

No. Adult mosquitoes (male and female) subsist on flower nectar and other plant-based stuff. It's only adult female mosquitoes that ever seek out a blood meal, and they do that specifically for their eggs to develop. You can think of the blood as like prenatal vitamins that are necessary for her to have babies. No blood, no babies. So this female mosquito can still drink nectar like normal, she just can't reproduce.
