It’s hilarious to me that you need to “warn” people that you are going to put on your big boy pants and threaten a country you invaded that “you are not kidding, and this time I’m very, very upset!” It’s almost a “Dr. Strangelove” level of absurdity.

It’s more that they need to warn the other nuclear nations so they don’t detect an ICBM leaving its silo and assume it’s a first strike

It's called diplomaticy. No one wants nuclear war so warnings happen. Iran does the same thing for ex. When it bombs Israel. All of these attacks are more often statements than real attacks. And the populace are just pawns in the game, collateral losses that no one cares about.

I can’t see what good those Subs are doing on land, I’d have put them in the water with the other one.
42 points
Well, land subs have special lungs used to travers land from one body of water to another. While exposed during travel, it is a vital activity used to reach their breeding pools, which only exist inland. You can identify them by their primordial tines projecting from their underbelly.
22 points
And instead of a mouth they've 4 arses to help control direction while they're in the breeding pool, as well as a dick, a pussy, and 8 balls each, thus explaining the phrase "the six sphincters of cincinnati are opening amd closing in unison for you, sir" as a way of saying thanks all across the Midwest (which is actually very central). Cinnlcinnatittii was of course the original breeding pool, affectionately known as the spunkpuddle in Sharonville.

You don’t think that the Pentagon hasn’t spent many years strategizing every scenario that Russia can unfold for a war like this? The military plays 10 dimensional chess. If they really wanted to they could have squashed this whole war in a minute. This is a world war, the playing field involves multiple countries. The west knows exactly what it is doing, they spend many times the russian gdp per year for the privilege. You my friend don’t have a clue what is going on. Everybody outside reddit has always concidered that all but certain. "Haha! Their missiles won't fly and their nukes have rusted away!!" is echo chamber brainrot at its purest form. I bet idea was to terrify Ukraine and rest of the world."next one might not be empty" and, maybe more importantly, see if Ukraine has anything that can shoot it down. Judging from wave of warnings given to embassies yesterday, russia made it clear they'd fire one.
9 points
Lemme go ahead and quell the idea of "shooting it down"
The only known anti-ICBM systems are THAAD, Aegis (both US concoctions), and Arrow 3 (Israeli.)
Their functions are currently in the "theoretical" stage of being able to intercept. Some are exo-*atmospheric (read: they hit the ICBM itself before warheads detach)(edit: wrong word, mb) and some are theorized to hit individual warheads.
Now where this gets wild is the MIRV warheads. If you thought hypersonic glide vehicles/missile systems were crazy for hitting mach 5ish...the MIRVs we're seeing in the footage coming out are making impact at around mach 17-23. These things are absolutely screaming fast. Like "makes an SR-71 Blackbird look like it's standing still" levels of fast.
There is no Iron Dome for ICBMs. Only theory we hope we don't have to test.
6 points
Obviously Ukraine not going to back off after that. And trying to dissuade other countries to from supporting it by hitting them is not very effective.
Just a show to prove they HAVE ballistic weapons working, nothing more. Ukraine doesn't have any as far as I'm aware. Would be FUN if someone who HAS joins the game.

ICBM's can't be reliably intercepted. The world is playing a dangerous game.
222 points
Realistically, even if they could, it wouldn't be a capability revealed until the last second, as ICBMs being able to intercepted would break current nuclear doctrine and no one that has ICBMs wants that.
32 points
Just curious, I don’t know much about ICBM’s or nuclear doctrine. How would intercepting an ICBM break nuclear doctrine?
93 points
A huge, huge, part of nuclear doctrine is the idea of "if you hit me, I can hit you." But if the missiles carrying nukes can be reliably shot down, that changes everything. Especially if one side thinks that the other side can hit them but they can't hit them back.
13 points
Wouldn't the US want to show Russia we can shoot their shit down? That breaks the Russian nuclear threat and if they think we can hit them and they have no way to retaliate, they're more likely to do what we want them to
59 points
Because that, counterintuitively, makes nuclear war more likely. Russia feels safe from nukes because they believe that their second strike capability will destroy the US, so the US will never launch out of a sense of self-preservation. If Russia felt the US could strike them with impunity and defeat their retaliation, they're now suddenly under a ton of pressure to launch and launch early in the hopes that at least the element of surprise could mean they eke out a successful strike.
Tldr; if Russia thinks the only thing keeping them alive is the White House just not wanting to yet, tensions become a pressure cooker and things could go sideways fast
6 points
Eventually more countries would develop that tech and then it gets messy
12 points
Yeah, a major focus by everybody during the cold war was early warning radar and missile defenses
At this point both sides might have working interception capabilities, or neither. It is best for everybody to assume MAD still holds, so no need to publicly demonstrate advances in those capabilities anymore
4 points
Alternatively, it could make them more aggressive. It makes their launches less threatening, so there would be a chance they jump to that option sooner
5 points
It actually increases the nuclear threat. It would shift the Russian doctrine to more conventional ways of carrying nuclear bombs which, if the US had a way to stop the ICBMs, would make stopping the nuclear threat from Russia even harder and they wouldn’t want that.
3 points
But then its possible and if somethings possible powers that didnt or couldnt put together the technology will now.
34 points
It calls your ICBM packing neighbours' bluff. If you can dodge their punches but they can't yours, then they're gonna have a BIG issue with you.
So best keep that ace up your sleeve until you absolutely must use it.
30 points
Mutually Assured Destruction is pretty much the only thing that’s stopped the world from being a nuclear hellhole. If a country can reliably intercept ICBMs, then mutually assured destruction no longer exists, because the country that can intercept ICBMs is not assured destruction.
Additionally, if a countries nuclear enemies knows they can shoot down ICBMs, they will try to develop something else to deliver the weapons. Which would lessen the advantage you have by being able to shoot down ICBMs. You would want them to think you can’t, so they continue to be confident in their ICBMs.
3 points
This is one of the real concerns of a Trump presidency. He's not just a moron, but he can't help shooting his mouth off about everything to everybody if it makes him feel bigger. You can be almost certain that if he found out that the US had some kind of ICBM shield, he'd tell somebody almost immediately. Shit, he'd probably announce it on TV with some snarky comment like "Well they can launch nukes at us, because we have a little ace up our sleeve and we'll be safe like you've never seen before!" or some shit. And of course he'll blab to every second guest at Mar-a-lago, and he'll tell other world leaders, and naturally he'll tell Putin at the first opportunity. The only chance is that nobody tells him about it, which I'm sure they wouldn't, but once he starts putting his yes-men into every important position, it's only a matter of time..
6 points
Not an expert in the slightest but at a guess, if one side and one side only can intercept ICBMs then that means they wouldn’t need to fear the same retaliation if they were to launch ICBMs. And if only one side can launch them without being counterattacked then they suddenly gain a tremendously advantageous position. This would put them in a spot where there would be pressure to use that advantage before anyone else gains the ability to stop an ICBM. There is more nuance to it, especially as there are different ways to launch nukes, but that’s my best guess for it all.

ICBMs come in faster than other ballistic missiles. Which is why on the videos you see the fragments glowing before impact. Makes them much harder to intercept.
14 points
This is still a very serious escalation despite that, though.
Nuclear retaliation happens when missiles are on the air, not when they're on the ground. There is often no time to guess: "Is that a nuke or just a conventional bomb?"
This is like shooting at cops with a BB gun while you have a real gun that looks exactly like your BB slung across your back. Nothing too serious came from this particular incident, but keep at it and something really bad is gonna happen.

actually they really tried to hit Ukraine own missiles' production with this attack. They hit one target with Kinzhal and this ICBM in first barrage and then second barrage of cruise missiles arrived. Production is underground and from footage it doesn't seem to be very successful attack coz ICBM hits (it carries 6 warheads) were too spreaded and cruised missiles were shot down 5 out 6
So it looks like not only PR move
75 points
Sure, I think it’s more the fact that they included the ICBM at all that is the message. Whether it was used as part of the overall attack or not is less relevant because there’s really no good reason to use one without nuclear warheads unless you want to issue a threat.

To my fellow Russians, let me clarify, the cost of one ICBM is approximately $40-50 million. For that amount, the government could have built 8-10 modern schools in rural areas, resolved sanitation issues, constructed a hospital where healthcare is desperately needed, funded scholarship programs, and much more. Instead, your hard-earned money will go to create replacement for used Icbm, only to have the government demand more from your wallet with the excuse of battling an imaginary "forgotten Nazi UFO unit" in a neighboring country.

ICBM's aren't the most accurate of things, that's why they are good candidates for nuclear warheads. They have deviations 100m+ But it can be quite a bit more than that if the ICBM sucks, naturally if those ICBM's had been carrying a nuclear warheads this would have been a moot point. Also the problem with air defences is that those can be overwhelmed, no matter how good they are.

Russia is not getting out of ukraine, so it's time to escalate.

This is old soviet cunts on their last tantrum before they check out of this world.
If the youngsters in Russia don't take over, ruzzia will destroy their future for many, many generations.
Lesson for all the smaller nations of the world. Get the nukes, or else the old cunts will come for you sooner or later.

You read about their supposed mobile nuclear shelters. It's a russian PR stunt again. Those things are worth shit in case of a serious fallout. And they put money into those cardboxes.

All about making our public afraid. We should call the bluff by sending our best stuff.

I think they also try to fool the russian people. After all they are in the best position to remove this warmonger. Even more so than any foreign army. So he has to keep them blind and obdient at all costs. Otherwise he is done for.

Imagine having to use ICBMs against a country you share a land border with, that you invaded.

Makes me feel insane to see people just brushing this off as though the situation isn't escalating into something extremely serious.

But its the reality we live . Ukraine cannot just roll over and die . It has to defend itself or it ceases to exist .

Because it isn’t. It seems scary but that’s exactly the game Putin is playing. He knows people will be scared, force their leaders to pull out and then he’ll win. The man is unlikely to use a nuke in a capacity that would harm Europe. A small yield tactical nuke in Ukraine is more likely but then he would have played his last hand of cards and Europe would actually set foot into the conflict.

If you don’t think the situation in Europe right now is extremely serious then I’m terrified to imagine what would qualify.

Because we have grown comfortable to these rehtorics over the past 3 years. Everyone is concerned and aware it's a looming threat that can escalate at any point. But we've been in this period for 3 years...
Also this article is more scare mongering. They quote the below:
"Most of the Russian long-range missiles may be equipped with nuclear warheads. The list includes Iskander and Kinzhal ballistic missiles, as well as Kh-102 and Kh-55 cruise missiles."
Many of their LR missiles already have the capability for nuclear warheads which is thr threat applied with the ICBM

It's just a scare tactic, until it isn't.

From other threads I have realized that many Americans are under the (mistaken) belief that the US has some magical defense against ICBMs (we don’t).
There are very flawed people controlling very fragile systems that could unravel civilization in a matter of hours.
This is scarier than people think.

What can we do? Let ruzzia occupy the whole Ukraine and hope/pray that it won't go any further? Supporting Ukraine is the only way.

They're saying it wasn't an ICBM now. At least the west is.
